Live Review: Bear Vs. Shark at Bowery Ballroom

In 2005, as Detroit, Michigan's Bear Vs. Shark began to get the notoriety and acclaim they had been fighting for over the years they split up after the release of their sophomore album. In the wake of their absence, the myth of this band's chaotic live shows and an emergence of new fans that got a hold of their 2 albums, Right Now, You're in the Best of Hands. And If Something Isn't Quite Right, Your Doctor Will Know in a Hurry and Terrorhawk, their popularity soared even more. After years of teasing the idea of a reunion, in early 2016, they announced they were back and hitting the road.

Performing for the first time in Manhattan in more than a decade, Bear Vs. Shark sold-out Bowery Ballroom and it was as if they never left. In the 60 minutes they performed at the intimate downtown venue, they absolutely destroyed the place. Their hardcore fans packed the front of the venue as other fans, either too old to throw down or seeing them for the first time, stood around the venue in total awe.

Opening with "Ma Jolie," from the get-go it was as if a bomb went off and people were scurrying for safety. As the pits broke out, singer Marc Paffi, one of the greatest frontmen of all time, would throw his body around the stage like a prop and the fans ate it up.

Songs like "Campfire," "Don't Tell the Horses the Stables on Fire," "We Were Sad Now We're Rebuilding," "Catamaran," "5,6 Kids," "Rich People Say Fuck Yeah Hey Hey," didn't need Paffi's vocals as fans screamed every word. As the stage looked like a waterfall of humanity as fans dove off, Paffi would deep throat his mic and run around like a fish out of water adding to the show and cementing the legacy that the Motor City is home to greatest frontmen ever.

By the closing number, "Buses / No Buses," fans wanted more but the band admitted there was no encore as they only rehearsed a certain number of songs. It was fitting to their legacy as it was short, to the point and something everyone will remember forever.

Speaking to Dazed Digital, Marilyn Manson said his new album, Say10, due in February, will have a different feel for fans. He said: "It is, I would say, the last thing people would expect after hearing 'The Pale Emperor'. Coming from the people who I’ve played it to, it's a combination of 'Antichrist Superstar' and 'Mechanical Animals' in feeling.” He added: "It wasn’t my intent to go backwards. Everything goes in a full circle and it just becomes, without cannibalising work from the past, the same thing: which is ultimately you. I’m a little over-anxious to release it, so it was done very quickly, but it's by far the most thematic and over-complicated thing that I’ve done. In a way, it’s deceptively delightful to strangers. It’s like the old saying that the devil’s greatest secret is that people don’t believe he exists.”

A children's book on the life of J Dilla will be released in November. The book, written by his mother, will be called The Life Story of James Dewitt Yancey. Take a look at the cover, below:

Live Review: Peter Hook & The Light at Webster Hall

It has been 2 years since Peter Hook & The Light played New York City to perform music from his bands New Order and Joy Division. In that time, the bassist of the timeless bands wrote a book about his time in New Order, due next month in the UK and later in the US, he also toured Europe for a while.

On Thursday, he made his welcomed return to the Big Apple with a mind full of memories and fondness as his kicked off his latest tour which hears him and his band playing New Order's compilation record, Substance, in full as well as Joy Division hits set. In the first of 2 packed nights of inside the iconic Manhattan venue, the legendary bassist took fans down memory lane and reminded everyone, even his biggest fans, why both of his bands mattered so much.

In the 2-and-a-half hours he and The Light were on stage, it was hard to fathom how many hits New Order and Joy Division had. Just within the first hour, there were enough songs that some artists today wish they could both write and have in their arsenal. That is what great chemistry in a band does. As New Order have continued on without Hooky, his nostalgia tours rival the band that has most of the original members. In fact, at points, he does it better with less.

As close to the weekend as it was, the audience inside wanted to let loose. It was a combination of NYU students and adults that could be their parents paying tuition for their kids to go to school. The range was incredible, for some, it was reliving their youth, for others, it was seeing something they only heard or read about and finally get to experience. Hooky would pause from time to time to remember Ian Curtis and Tony Wilson, he would also describe certain events that happened to New Order while in New York, but mainly left it all up to the music. Webster Hall did suffer a few technical issues with his sound but no one seemed to mind. The music is all that mattered.

Live Review: The Libertines at Unity Rocks

The Libertines at Unity Rocks, Brixton 7th September 2016
By James Bohrsmanm
As one frontman was carried from the stage by security, the second strode along refusing to be halted by the venue cutting the sound. He maintained the frenzy of the crowd as they finished the show for him, singing in unison for the final song.
It was The Libertines, of course. It was the band’s first official UK gig in over nine months and marked a triumphant return to their hometown of London. Carl Barat was unceremoniously escorted off stage while his partner in crime Pete Doherty remained to inspire the crowd through a triumphant finale.
Despite never reaching the mainstream heights that their talent perhaps merited, the four-piece have cemented a legacy in Indie Rock and they reminded the Brixton fans why this past Wednesday. On a warm September night in their hometown, The Libertines took their fans back to the early 2000’s and a late night gig in Camden. They reminded everyone of that raw energy and passion and they showed why they are one of the greatest British bands in recent years.
The connection between Barat and Doherty on stage was present as ever, with the two joyfully embracing between songs, laughing and talking before thundering into frantic guitar riffs which had crowd surfers being pushed away from stage by security. As always the performance was full of scuffed riffs and botched transitions, but with The Libertines it wouldn’t be the same without that. Towards the end another suitably entertaining missed transition between songs left a period of no music, before Doherty powered into ‘Don’t Look Back into the Sun’ and sent the crowd into another frantic few minutes.
They opened the show with ‘The Delaney’ followed by ‘Barbarians’, before picking up a favourite from their new album in the shape of powerful single ‘Heart of the Matter’. The set went into overdrive when the band hammered out the notorious opening to ‘Horrow Show’. Anyone who saw the band in the early days would remember this as the catalyst for many a destroyed venue around London – a song that encapsulates the raw and feverish beginnings of the band.
Barat was carried off stage shortly after the conclusion of the last song, before Pete returned alone to finish with an encore of sorts. The power was cut but with Doherty’s encouragement the crowd finished ‘Music When the Lights Go Out’ – a fitting finale given the situation.
Based on last week’s performance, The Libertines should sit atop any rock ‘n’ roll fans bucket list to experience live. The show served as a reminder that this raucous four-piece remain one of the world’s most entertaining bands. Oh to be a Libertine.

Quick News

The Drums have confirmed that their fourth album has been finished and they will be releasing information on it soon.

Franz Nicolay spoke to Riot Fest ahead of The Hold Steady's performance in Chicago at the festival this weekend where they will play Boys and Girls in America this weekend. He discussed the making of the record, saying: "I think you can hear the creative tension, the elbowing and jockeying for musical position. This is where the pressure of the moment manifested: everyone taking responsibility for putting us over the top. Turn up every part, because what if leaving it out is the one thing that keeps it from succeeding? And I know that at the end of the mix and master, not everyone was confident that we hadn’t blown it. Stay Positive was an easier record to make, because we had validation that it had worked, and we could relax into the roles we’d staked out. But perhaps it is the undertone of anxiety that leavens the ebullience, like the hangover that haunts the parties in the lyrics, that brings Boys And Girls In America to life."

Justice will release their new album, Woman, in November.  Take a look at the cover, below:

Great Soundtracks: 'Reality Bites'

The 90s became the decade that gave us some of the best soundtracks that captured the feel of the decade as well as the film they represented. In 1994, Ben Stiller released the romantic comedy about Gen X called Reality Bites, the film chronicled a love triangle within the convoluted ideals of the decade. The soundtrack captured the characters relationships with each other and their enviroment.

Featuring music of the era like Lenny Kravitz, The Juliana Hatfield 3, Dinosaur Jr., The Posies, Lisa Loeb, Stiller also opted to go to the decade prior with hits from Crowded House, Squeeze and U2 to fill out what the intentions of his actors needed to embrace. The soundtrack still holds up and showcases a moment in time and a generation at a crossroads.

Recommended Reading: 'Dark Days'

In 2012, following a concert in Prague, Randy Blythe was arrested after a performance from his band Lamb of God. He was charged with manslaughter and spent years in a Czech prison for what authorities say he pushed a fan off the stage 2 years earlier at a concert in the city, which eventually led to the 19-year-old's passing. Blythe maintained that he had no recollection of the event but took his sentencing and went to prison.

In 2013, he was finally acquitted and in 2015, he released his story from behind the prison walls called Dark Days. The prison, which was a former Nazi concentration camp, discusses the challenges he faced behind bars. He had been clean and sober for 2 years and finally got a hold of his life until prison threw him a curveball. The man could have left broken and discouraged but instead walked out stronger and tougher than when he went in.

This book is not just the autobiography of the dark period of a musician and man, it is the story of the strength of endurance and the human spirit.

Final David Bowie Songs to be Released on 'Lazurus' Soundtrack

The original cast recording of the David Bowie penned musical Lazarus, starring Michael C. Hall, will be released in November.

The album features the original cast recordings as well as 3 brand new Bowie tunes done by The Thin White Duke himself just before his passing. It is the final songs he has ever recorded.

According to a press release, "The Lazarus cast album was produced by the show’s musical director Henry Hey, who had previously worked with Bowie on “The Next Day” and features vocals from Hall, Caruso, Cristin Miloti, Michael Esper and other cast members backed by the seven-piece house band Hey assembled for the New York run. The album was recorded January 11, 2016. Upon arriving at the studio, the musicians and cast were shocked and saddened to learn that Bowie had passed away the evening before. Their emotional performances that day are captured on this recording.

The distinctive artwork for the Lazarus cast recording has been designed by Jonathan Barnbrook who also worked with Bowie on the ★, The Next Day, Heathen and Nothing Has Changed albums.

Written by Bowie and Enda Walsh, directed by Ivo Van Hove and produced by Robert Fox, Lazarus opened December 7, 2015 at the New York Theatre Workshop to great critical acclaim."

In all of the chaos and on stage catastrophe, Wolves in the Throne Room reunited and returned to New York City for the first of 3 nights within the 5 boroughs.

Their first stop was the tiny Marlin Room of Webster hall where smoke and a some lights hid the band as they let the music do the talking.

As Zack de la Rocha Releases New Single, Here Are His Best Solo Moments

After nearly a year of teasing, Zack de la Rocha released the El-P produced single that many had speculated since they were spotted working together following the success of Run the Jewels' "Close Your Eyes and Count to Fuck."

The single, "Digging For Windows," is the former Rage Against the Machine frontman's first solo work since 2004's "We Want It All," which was produced by Trent Reznor and featured on the Fahrenheit 9/11 soundtrack.

Take a listen to the new track, "Digging For Windows," below:

Following the release of the song, El-P took to Twitter to confirm a de la Rocha solo album will arrive next year. He tweeted:

Now that has been settled, we look at the 5 best Zack de la Rocha solo moments since RATM first split in 2000. This solo record has been 17 years in the making, but here are other moments the emcee has shined.

5) Roni Size / Reprazent feat. Zack de la Rocha: "Centre of the Storm"

This banger came from the UK electro duo's 2000 album, In the Mode.

4) One Day As A Lion: "Wild International"

In 2008, de la Rocha emerged with former Queens of the Stone Age drummer Jon Theodore and formed One Day As A Lion. The duo released only an EP but this standout had people begging for more.

3) DJ Shadow & Zack de la Rocha: "March of Death"

This 2003 single was one of the first post-RATM appearances for Zack and still spits fire.

2) Zack de la Rocha: "We Want It All"

The first official solo single from the enigmatic California musician.

1) Run the Jewels feat. de la Rocha: "Close Your Eyes and Count to Fuck"

Without a doubt one of the best tracks of the decade and the comeback we all hoped for.
