Quick News

The Fratellis will release their new album, In Your Own Sweet Time, in March. Take a look at the cover, above.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs will release the 15th anniversary edition to their fantastic debut, Fever to Tell, in November. The reissue will featured the remastered record, B-sides, demoes, and unseen photos.

Arctic Monkeys are sad to be recording their sixth album in a secret location. The record is said to be out next year, according to reports.

A tune from Miles Davis and Deep Purple have become the first songs to be transferred into DNA. Twist Bioscience, a company that specializes in DNA synthesis, announced that it had encoded Davis' "Tutu" and Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," after they worked with Microsoft and University of Washington researchers to transfer the songs into actual DNA. The way to make is through binary code which is converted into the sequence and language of DNA. The songs came from recordings from the Montreaux Jazz Festival archives. “The amount of DNA used to store these songs is much smaller than one grain of sand,” said Karin Strauss, Ph.D., a senior researched at Microsoft, in a statement. “Amazingly, storing the entire six petabyte Montreux Jazz Festival’s collection would result in DNA smaller than one grain of rice.”

Dirty Orange will release their new EP, XXX, later this month. The London trio took to social media to make the announcement.

QUICK SPINS

J. Dilla The Diary
This latest posthumous release from the legendary Detroit producer hears J. Dilla stepping behind the mic. The Diary is a look inside the mind and verbal talents of the late great producer. Thanks to his estate lining up producers like Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, Hi-Tek and Karriem Riggins to work their magic by laying his vocal tracks over their beats or beats he left behind, fans get to hear what could have been.
FINAL GRADE: A-

DeftonesGore
Gore is of the most diverse records in the Sacramento band’s catalogue, as well as the most conflicting. Unlike the band’s previous efforts, Deftones bring back the mood swings and harmonies that haven’t been heard since their 2000 classic, White Pony. Gore is as in your face, as it is delicate. It may alienate some fans, appease others but also has the potential to rally a new base.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Pet Shop BoysSuper
Seriously, the most fun you will have listening to any album this year, so far.
FINAL GRADE: A-

M83- Junk
The latest installment from the ever-evolving French neo-New Wave band hears them venture further into the cosmic atmosphere with a whimsical record that you can dance to.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Charles BradleyChanges
Most artists begin their musical career when they are younger, for Charles Bradley it didn’t happen until the turn of the century. Now, the 67-year-old former James Brown impersonator is proving age is just a number with his third release.
FINAL GRADE: B+

MogwaiAtomic
While this album is a soundtrack to a documentary about atoms, it still has the thumbprint of a Mogwai record.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Parquet Courts Human Performance
The New York City garage kings return and add another record of solid rock songs to their growing arsenal.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Last Shadow Puppets Everything You Have Come to Expect
The dynamic British duo of Alex Turner and Miles Kane returned after almost a decade apart and instead of attempting to become a modern Lennon / McCartney they attempt to become a modern Mick and Keef.
FINAL GRADE: B+

JayhawksPaging Mr. Proust
The Minnesota indie-rock favorites return with their ninth album and bring forth the harmonies and talents that have laid the foundation of their illustrious career. The album hears the band playing on their strengths and is the most confidant release of their catalogue.
FINAL GRADE: B

PJ Harvey The Hope Six Demolition Project
Inspired by trips to Washington, D.C.’s housing projects, the British singer traveled to Kosovo and Afghanistan work on telling the story of the plight of the poor around the world. The result is an ambitious and heavy album that pulls at the heart.
FINAL GRADE: B

Katy B Honey
For her third record, Katy B teamed up with everyone from Four Tet, Craig David, Major Lazer, Hannah Wants and more to create the ultimate dance party.
FINAL GRADE: B

Frankie CosmosNext Thing
The indie rocker returns with another look into her soul for her Next Thing.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Sturgill Simpson – A Sailor’s Guide to The Earth

The Americana / country crooner shows off his appreciation for rock and roll on his third album. A Sailor’s Guide to the Earth is a record that at points is very slow and dare we say, boring, however, in some parts it is a beautiful cornucopia of sound.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Yeasayer – Amen & Goodbye
Yeasayer return with more bouncy hooks and catchy riffs – it is nothing new but certainly nothing to be disappointed in.
FINAL GRADE: B-

The Boxer Rebellion Ocean By Ocean
After starting families, England’s The Boxer Rebellion have matured and grown up. However, they manage to take major life events and fold it into uninspiring songs.
FINAL GRADE: C

Guided By Voices Please Be Honest
Following a mass exodus of Guided By Voices in 2014, just two years later Robert Pollard reformed the band and brought along a slew of hired guns. In many ways, it feels as if it is indie rock’s version of Guns N Roses. However, Please Be Honest feels rushed, flat and often times childish.
FINAL GRADE: C

BeyonceLemonade
The pop queen returned with a surprise new album, however, what had people talking and spreading gossip with the lyrics someone else wrote for her about Jay Z’s alleged infidelities. Yet, with an HBO special to launch the record, Beyonce gave the world a piece of art, but the music is not there. Lemonade is too sample heavy, too uninspired and in often cases redundant. What saves the record is the socially conscious “Formation,” but what has people talking is who HOV is sleeping with. It is all brilliant marketing but sales are not what make an album good. An artist of Beyonce’s caliber and talent should never make “alright” or mediocre records, but she just did.

Live Review: The Last Shadow Puppets @ Webster Hall

Almost a decade after their 2007 debut, The Last Shadow Puppets returned to New York and showed that distance in both space and time does make the heart grow fonder. The band, who are on a small East Coast tour before they head to Coachella this weekend performed to a sold-out Webster Hall and proved that it was worth the wait to see them.

Thanks to the festival season and the release of their new album, their first in nine years, Everything You Have Come to Expect, the band made up of Miles Kane and Arctic Monkey's front man Alex Turner brought over some touring musicians and a string ensemble to join them on this tour and make it a good excuse to give something back to the fans.

Hitting the stage just after 10 p.m., the room, which was packed like sardines in a tin can were eagerly waiting for the band to arrive. As Kane came out dressed like he just came from a South Beach club and Turner, who got the most applause, looked like he raided Kanye's closet, opened with "Aviation" off their new record and straight away had the audiences attention. Mixing in songs from both records perfectly, the fans were ecstatic from start to finish.

What was obvious from the get-go, is that the band, which started as a side project for both Kane and Turner, is clearly the most fun they have as musicians and as friends. It is an opportunity for them to let loose. While the Arctic Monkeys are one of the biggest rock bands in the world and Kane, a respected musician back in the UK, this is an opportunity to break the mold and not be as serious. With choreographed dance routines and fancy footwork, the duo seemed to have a blast together.

As they ripped through songs like "The Age of Understatement," "Element of Surprise, "Dracula Teeth," "My Mistakes Were Made For You" and "Bad Habits," their seeming never ending set took a sharper turn when they covered The Beatles' "I Want You" and "She's So Heavy." It was clear from their first album nearly a decade ago that the Fab Four had a profound impact on them and now they acted on it by paying homage to the best.

As the clock came closer to midnight, they bid farewell making fans hope it doesn't take another nine years to return.

QUICK SPINS

Iggy Pop Post Pop Depression
In what might be the Godfather of Punk's swansong, Iggy Pop goes out with a bang with his best album in decades. Recruiting Josh Homme to play and produce the album as well as Matt Helders of Artic Monkeys on drums and members of Queens of the Stone Age, Pop assembled a band that is indebted to his career and makes them shine as they still make the star of the show a spectacle. It has been a long time since Pop has sounded this raw and uncharted without sounding frivolous. It also is the first time Pop has sounded this polished without being overproduced. If this is how the master wants to hang up his career, then he did it in all the right ways.

Bob Mould Patch The Sky
Bob Mould has struck a creative vein in recent years and has not backed away from whatever is stirring his creativity. Like a fine wine, the former Husker Du singer gets better with age and Patch the Sky is proof of that. Fresh off the heals of his fantastic 2014 release, Beauty and Ruin, Patch the Sky is a record to celebrate.
FINAL GRADE: A

Jeff BuckleyYou and I
In a posthumous release that features more covers than originals, it still is haunting to hear Jeff Buckley’s voice and imagine what could have been. As imaginative as it is vulnerable, it is a beautiful record.
FINAL GRADE: A

Violent SohoWaco
On their third album, Australian post-grunge renegades rediscover the form that made them international indie sensations. With hard hitting songs and pulse pounding rhythms, Waco, is without a doubt their finest hour.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Flatbush Zombies 3001: A Laced Odyssey
At long last, the debut album from New York rap collective Flatbush Zombies has arrived and it was worth the wait. The album is a psychedelic rap trip that throws back to the attitude era of the 90s and mixes in modern sounds that have been blaring on the streets.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Bear Hands You’ll Pay For This
Just in time for the better weather, Brooklyn post-punkers Bear Hands bring together a collection of songs that is both joyous and euphoric. The experimental sounds delivered on the band’s third release are just the right amount of pop and indie fused together.
FINAL GRADE: B+

UnderworldBarbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future
Six years after their last release, Underworld return to reclaim the dancefloors from phony button pushers and computer nerds to show how it is done.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Loretta LynnFull Circle
As country music gains popularity by the day, it takes a legend to show you how it is done. Twelve years since her last release, the brilliant Loretta Lynn returns with one of her best albums. Produced by June and Johnny Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, it is the sound of the heartland that America needs.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Joy FormidableHitch
The hard rocking Welsh trio return with another album of sonic slamming riffs and heavy hitting beats. The Joy Formidable seemed to be everywhere when they arrived in 2011 and not a band at the time sounded anything like them. Two years later they returned with the heavy Wolf’s Law and now are back but bring the melody and sound that made them a buzz band five years ago.
FINAL GRADE: B

The Thermals We Disappear
The Portland indie rock trio are back with their seventh album and while not much has changed in terms of sound, it is a new collection of songs to add to their impressive arsenal.
FINAL GRADE: B

The I Don’t Cares Wild Stab
Paul Westerberg and Juliana Hatfield combine forces and point a middle finger at the music establishment and showcase that sometimes not giving a fuck is exactly what you need to do.
FINAL GRADE: B

Nada Surf You Know Who You Are
The New York indie icons are back with their first record in four years and showcase a slightly new formula to the sound that made them heroes 20 years ago.
FINAL GRADE: B

RJD2Dame Fortune
Philly beatmaker RJD2 returns and shakes things up a bit by adding more vocals to his instrumentals than usual for one album, however, the result is a fresh piece of new direction to a man that has been altering the musical landscape for decades.
FINAL GRADE: B

The Coral Distance In Between
The British indie back returns with a record of predictable but fun rock and roll. This album probably won’t inspire new fans but will certainly please the old ones.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Brian FallonPainkillers
For his official solo outing, The Gaslight Anthem’s frontman brings the endearing and tender qualities of his heart and pours them into his work. Using the Horrible Crows, his first side project as his backing band, the record is more folk than it is rock or pop but does contain elements Fallon is known for. He doesn’t stray too far from the curve but does let us in deeper into his soul.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Pete YornArrangingTime
The latest release from the New Jersey singer /songwriter, who now spends his days in the L.A. sun, is a frolicking soft rock record where he reunites with musicforthemorningafter producer R. Walt Vincent for what feels like spiritual sequel to their blockbuster 2001 LP.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Iggy Pop Reveals Josh Homme Partnership Details

After announcing to the world in the New York Times that Iggy Pop has teamed up with Josh Homme for a record called Post Pop Depression, more details have emerged.

As stated before Queens of the Stone Age's Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkey Matt Helders are also in the band and the record arrives in March.

"I wanted to be free," Iggy said in a press statement. "To be free, I needed to forget. To forget, I needed music. Josh had that in him, so I set out to provoke an encounter-first with a carefully worded text, followed by a deluge of writings all about me. No composer wants to write about nothing. He got revved up and we had a great big rumble in the desert USA.”

Eagles of Death Metal are giving free tickets to their upcoming Paris gig next month to the survivors of the Bataclan massacre that happened in November when the band was playing.

Speaking to VICE, Pusha-T finally broke his silence on the breakup of Clipse in 2014. According to the rapper, his brother and partner No Malice walked away after a tour in 2014. The duo seemed to be in two different places and Malice was ready for Pusha-T to be a solo artist and did not want to be apart of the  music world.

Last Shadow Puppets New Album Teaser

Quick News

John Giddings, the Isle of Wight festival promoter has spoken to Music Week and said that his pal, David Bowie has retired from touring. Giddings said: "David is one of the best artists I’ve ever worked with. But every time I see him now, before I even speak to him, he goes, 'I’m not touring' and I say, 'I’m not asking'." Bowie last toured in 2014.

Speaking to the crowd at the Austin City Limits festival, Dave Grohl said that Foo Fighters have recorded five new songs and one of which is with Ben Kweller. Grohl said: "Just by chance, I bumped into an old friend that I hadn’t seen in about 16 years, right as I was recording a vocal. This motherfucker walks in — I’m like, ‘Hey, man!’ — and he starts fucking singing the most beautiful harmony to the thing I was singing. I was like, ‘Get your ass in the vocal booth right now.’ And then he said, ‘Hey, if you want, I’ll come up and sing a song with you tonight.'"

According to artist Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz will return with new music in 2016. He spoke to DIY and said: "That’s [due]next year. I’m working on it at the moment, and it’s going very well. I’m very excited. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’m at that phase of experimentation. What I try not to do when I’m working in this creative period, the cooking of the mess, is go to other peoples’ exhibitions and look at other peoples’ work. I close my eyes, and don’t want to know what anyone else is doing. Doing that has kind of ruined the creative process for me in the past, and I don’t want to let that happen again."

Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner and his friend singer / songwriter Miles Kanes' side-project The Last Shadow Puppets seem to be recording again. Musician Owen Pallett revealed he is collaborating with the British duo on their sophomore LP. Pallett tweeted that he was working with the band in a message to fans that has already been deleted. No official confirmation has been made from Turner and Kane.

Bars of Gold, the offshoot of Bear Vs. Shark singer Marc Paffi, has confirmed via their Facebook page that the Michigan post-hardcore band are reuniting. Bear Vs. Shark have remained inactive for almost a decade and seem to be coming back thanks to this post, below:

10 Artists That Should Do a James Bond Theme

Now that Sam Smith's James Bond song, "The Writing's on the Wall," the theme to the upcoming SPECTRE has been released, we look at 10 other artists that have not done a Bond theme and deserve one just as much as Idris Elba deserves to be the most famous spy in all of cinema once Daniel Craig hangs up his tux.

10 - Depeche Mode
The British doom-and-gloom electro rockers have been reinventing themselves for over 30 years and have appealed to generations, so not only would it be fitting and ideal, just think of the sexy, mysterious, and compelling song they would make?! It would be the ethos on Bond in under five minutes.

9 - Noel Gallagher
Earlier this year, Noel Gallagher told Digital Spy he would write the next Bond tune "In a heartbeat," so with his songwriting chops, popularity, and Bond-esque swagger, why are we dragging our feet on picking him?

8 - The Chemical Brothers
How much fund would a Chemical Brothers 007 tune be? It would be as adventurous as one of the spy's many missions around the globe. Given their dabbling into the soundtrack world with Hanna, they would be a solid choice.

7 - Lana Del Rey
With Adele and Sam Smith's Bond themes, it seems as if producers are going back to the cinematic, brooding style of songs of old. As Lana Del Rey's latest, Honeymoon, shows, she can do all of those styles and would make an interesting choice.

6 - Rihanna
Sexy, stylish, seductive -- That is how you can describe both Rihanna and James Bond. Since she shares so many of the same traits as the character, she would seamlessly fit into the character's universe as a performer and could even be a Bond girl.

5 - David Bowie
Now that the Thin White Duke is back writing songs for film and TV, there really is no explanation needed as to why he would be the perfect choice to do a theme song.

4 - Frank Ocean
Daniel Craig gave 007 a certain vulnerability and that mood can get tapped into and transformed into music thanks to Frank Ocean. With his R&B and mellow hip-hop style, Ocean can make Bond walk on water.

3 - Florence and the Machine
While most of Florence's music feels like it belongs in a film and has such a grand nature to it, her Bond theme would be just as epic as one of his missions.

2 - James Blake
While every man wants to be Bond and women want Bond, he is a moody bastard. Which is why James Blake could make a winning theme thanks to his moody yet brilliant delivery.

1 - Arctic Monkeys
Many artists try and go for a Bond theme that will be remembered and be embraced by all. Arctic Monkeys would want none of that. In fact, the Sheffield band would probably try and craft the loudest and fastest Bond theme around and make it one sexy number.
