2020 The Albums: Honorable Mentions

via GIPHY

In keeping our Thanksgiving weekend tradition, we are coming out of hiatus to post our year-end music lists for the year. As 2020 was a year like no other, the music has been incredible. Here is the first of three lists dedicated to our favorites of the calendar.

Instead of presenting everything over the course of three weeks as we did last year, we are going to just get them all out now over the course of this weekend.

Here is our first list -- Honorable Mentions -- records that were good but not strong enough to crack our top 10. As we always do, we breakdown the list in short form and then with explanations.

2020 Honorable Album Mentions (Short Form and in No Particular Order)

- Spoek Mathambo - Tales from the Lost Cities

- Deftones - Ohms

- Sparta - Trust the River

- Yves Tumor - Heaven to a Tortured Mind

- Psychedelic Furs - Made of Rain

- Gorillaz - Song Machine

Now, in long form in no particular order.

Spoek Mathambo - Tales from the Lost Cities

The South African rapper, producer, artist extraordinaire returned with one of the most thought provoking albums of the year. Tales from the Lost Cities makes you dance and think at the same time and no artist since The Specials has been able to pull off such a feat. A key to the world around us and is a year where travel was all but non-existent, this was a great way to escape.

Deftones - Ohms

Moody metal plus synths plus the energy of their live shows boiled down to 47 minutes. Ohms was all of our collective rage, loss, desperation and desires of the year brought to us by a special band that get better with age and continue to push themselves for our entertainment but to get their creative juices going. This record is one that will sound incredible once we can see concerts again and Deftones will deliver on it.

Sparta - Trust the River

In their first record in 14 years and fourth album overall, Sparta returned with one of the most underrated comeback albums in recent memory. Trust the River is Jim Ward's signature style and thumbprint but it is grown up and mature giving us a new life and new era for the El Paso band as they surge forward.

Yves Tumor - Heaven to a Tortured Mind

The fourth album from the Miami experimental artist is their best work yet. Heaven to a Tortured Mind is as if David Bowie produced a JPEG MAFIA duet record with Tyler, the Creator. It is everything from rock, rap, R&B, and with so much soul and pain thrown in it is hard to not to be blown away by it.

Psychedelic Furs - Made of Rain

With their first album in 19 years, the British new wave icons returned in a big way. A gorgeous demonstration that even though they were away for 2 decades that can come back strong as ever. Made of Rain is a new wave album made for the 21st century and we are all here for it.

Gorillaz - Song Machine

The best album Gorillaz have released since 2010's groundbreaking, Plastic Beach. Song Machine is a compilation based off their 2020 animated internet series and features an abundance of artists like Peter Hook of Joy Division, Robert Smith of The Cure, Elton John, Beck, St. Vincent, Slaves, Slowthai, Schoolboy Q, 6lack and many others. This is a fun record that features like the best playlist ever assembled.

Speaking to NME, Deftones' Chino Moreno has said that the band are already thinking about the followup to last year's, Gore. "We know each other oh so well and for so many years that it's comforting. We grew up in the same neighborhood, spending every day in the garage together, at school, after school. Then, ten, fifteen, twenty years later, we're all grown adults with children living in different cities — so when we go back on tour it's like we get to go back to clubhouse," he said. "When we make records, we don't really talk about what we're trying to do or what our ideas are for it — we kind of just go in and make music. That's what keeps it fresh for us. We don't try to box ourselves in to these pre-conceived ideas, but we have talked about getting together sooner rather than later to start making noise together — just out of pure excitement of creating music."

2016 The Albums: Honorable Mentions

via GIPHY

So it begins.....the rollout of various music lists from us as we look back at the year that was and present our picks for the most recognizable albums of the year.
Over the last 10 years, it has become a Thanksgiving weekend tradition for us to issue our first list -- Honorable Mentions. This is the first of three lists we will bring out over the next three weeks, next week we will present our coveted League of Their Own and then finally, the Top 10 albums of the year.
Here we go -- our Honorable Mentions, albums that were very good, but not good enough to crack the Top 10 but still worth of note.

As we always do, we breakdown the list in short form and then with explanations.

2016 Honorable Mentions in Short Form (In No Particular Order):

- Deftones - Gore
- Dinosaur Jr. - Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not
- Suede - Night Thoughts
- Pet Shop Boys - Super
- Metallica - Hardwired... To Self Destruct
- The Dillinger Escape Plan - Disassociation

Now, in Long Form (In No Particular Order):

Deftones - Gore

Gore is of the most diverse records in the Sacramento band’s catalogue, as well as the most conflicting. Unlike the band’s previous efforts, Deftones bring back the mood swings and harmonies that haven’t been heard since their 2000 classic, White Pony. Gore is as in your face, as it is delicate. It may alienate some fans, appease others but also has the potential to rally a new base.

Dinosaur Jr. -  Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not

Like most things in 2016, the best things to come out this year are from seasoned veterans and icons. Dinosaur Jr. return with what could be their best record in decades. It is everything we have come to love about them over the years but better. Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not is a breakup album, it is a rock and roll romantic album, but it is also one of their finest albums in years.

Suede - Night Thoughts

After their blockbuster return in 2013, Suede are back again with Night Thoughts. The record dips more into the darkness that they are known for while giving the savvy and slick musical ability to make a pop song about death sound sexy.
 Pet Shop Boys - Super

This was without a doubt the best record the 80s dancefloor tycoons have released since they first emerged on the scene over 30 years ago. Super is a record that not only will have you moving and dancing for its entire duration, it is also an album that brought so much joy to a dismal year.

Metallica - Hardwired...To Self Destruct

Eight years after the fantastic Death Magnetic, Metallica return with a lengthy piece of chomping guitars, blistering basslines and drums that only they can deliver. While they may be getting older in age, it certainly isn’t slowing them down.
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Disassociation

The mathcore band announced that after 20 years together and Dissociation was their swansong. If you are a fan of this band, this was a bittersweet farewell as one of the greatest and heaviest live bands around was saying goodbye but in typical fashion they were not doing it quietly. Dissociation is their way of letting fans knows they were going out with a bang on their explosive career.

Frank Zappa's estate will release two unreleased records from the legendary alternative rocker. The albums, Frank Zappa For President and The Crux of the Biscuit, will be released next month.

Speaking to the audience at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards, former Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison addressed his 2013 departure from the band. He said he left due to personal reasons, which now ended up being a medical condition. "I got really really sick with a horrible disease called transverse myelitis, I lost my legs. I couldn’t play any more. It was a form of multiple sclerosis, which I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy."

Kaiser Chiefs will release their new album, Stay Together, in October.

In a new interview with Clash magazine, Eric Clapton says he is lucky to be alive and in pain when he plays guitar. The iconic lickmaster said: "I've had quite a lot of pain over the last year. It started with lower back pain, and turned into what they call peripheral neuropathy. [It's] hard work to play the guitar and I've had to come to terms with the fact that it will not improve."

Deftones frontman Chino Moreno will play a historic performance inside a volcano -- 400ft underground in Iceland at the end of the week. The performance, which has just been announced, is part of the Secret Solstice Festival.

Schoolboy Q has announced that his new album, Blank Face LP, will be out next month. Take a look at the cover, below:
The 20th anniversary to one of the greatest books on music and the punk rock era, Please Kill Me, will be reissued later this summer with new photos, chapters and an afterword.

QUICK SPINS

J. Dilla – The Diary
This latest posthumous release from the legendary Detroit producer hears J. Dilla stepping behind the mic. The Diary is a look inside the mind and verbal talents of the late great producer. Thanks to his estate lining up producers like Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, Hi-Tek and Karriem Riggins to work their magic by laying his vocal tracks over their beats or beats he left behind, fans get to hear what could have been.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Deftones – Gore
Gore is of the most diverse records in the Sacramento band’s catalogue, as well as the most conflicting. Unlike the band’s previous efforts, Deftones bring back the mood swings and harmonies that haven’t been heard since their 2000 classic, White Pony. Gore is as in your face, as it is delicate. It may alienate some fans, appease others but also has the potential to rally a new base.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Pet Shop Boys – Super
Seriously, the most fun you will have listening to any album this year, so far.
FINAL GRADE: A-

M83- Junk
The latest installment from the ever-evolving French neo-New Wave band hears them venture further into the cosmic atmosphere with a whimsical record that you can dance to.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Charles Bradley – Changes
Most artists begin their musical career when they are younger, for Charles Bradley it didn’t happen until the turn of the century. Now, the 67-year-old former James Brown impersonator is proving age is just a number with his third release.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Mogwai – Atomic
While this album is a soundtrack to a documentary about atoms, it still has the thumbprint of a Mogwai record.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Parquet Courts – Human Performance
The New York City garage kings return and add another record of solid rock songs to their growing arsenal.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Last Shadow Puppets – Everything You Have Come to Expect
The dynamic British duo of Alex Turner and Miles Kane returned after almost a decade apart and instead of attempting to become a modern Lennon / McCartney they attempt to become a modern Mick and Keef.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Jayhawks – Paging Mr. Proust
The Minnesota indie-rock favorites return with their ninth album and bring forth the harmonies and talents that have laid the foundation of their illustrious career. The album hears the band playing on their strengths and is the most confidant release of their catalogue.
FINAL GRADE: B

PJ Harvey – The Hope Six Demolition Project
Inspired by trips to Washington, D.C.’s housing projects, the British singer traveled to Kosovo and Afghanistan work on telling the story of the plight of the poor around the world. The result is an ambitious and heavy album that pulls at the heart.
FINAL GRADE: B

Katy B – Honey
For her third record, Katy B teamed up with everyone from Four Tet, Craig David, Major Lazer, Hannah Wants and more to create the ultimate dance party.
FINAL GRADE: B

Frankie Cosmos – Next Thing
The indie rocker returns with another look into her soul for her Next Thing.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Sturgill Simpson – A Sailor’s Guide to The Earth

The Americana / country crooner shows off his appreciation for rock and roll on his third album. A Sailor’s Guide to the Earth is a record that at points is very slow and dare we say, boring, however, in some parts it is a beautiful cornucopia of sound.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Yeasayer – Amen & Goodbye
Yeasayer return with more bouncy hooks and catchy riffs – it is nothing new but certainly nothing to be disappointed in.
FINAL GRADE: B-

The Boxer Rebellion – Ocean By Ocean
After starting families, England’s The Boxer Rebellion have matured and grown up. However, they manage to take major life events and fold it into uninspiring songs.
FINAL GRADE: C

Guided By Voices – Please Be Honest
Following a mass exodus of Guided By Voices in 2014, just two years later Robert Pollard reformed the band and brought along a slew of hired guns. In many ways, it feels as if it is indie rock’s version of Guns N Roses. However, Please Be Honest feels rushed, flat and often times childish.
FINAL GRADE: C

Beyonce – Lemonade
The pop queen returned with a surprise new album, however, what had people talking and spreading gossip with the lyrics someone else wrote for her about Jay Z’s alleged infidelities. Yet, with an HBO special to launch the record, Beyonce gave the world a piece of art, but the music is not there. Lemonade is too sample heavy, too uninspired and in often cases redundant. What saves the record is the socially conscious “Formation,” but what has people talking is who HOV is sleeping with. It is all brilliant marketing but sales are not what make an album good. An artist of Beyonce’s caliber and talent should never make “alright” or mediocre records, but she just did.
FINAL GRADE: C-

Quick News

Eagulls will release their new album, Ullages, in May. Speaking to NME, drummer Henry Ruddle said: "It feels like it’s more to do with relationships, not in a romantic way, but more as in your relationship with the person you might bump into on the street, or the person you work with… Very brief encounters and how odd they can be.”

Speaking to Ultimate-Guitar.com, Deftones' Stephen Carpenter said he wasn't interested in the direction his band was going for their upcoming LP, Gore. He said playing on the record is an achievement for him. Carpenter explained: "When we were coming up with the ideas and writing the songs, the stuff that was being written, you know, the other guys’ ideas, I wasn’t too interested in it. It wasn’t the style or the sound I was hoping we would take. My band is going one direction and I am going another one currently. I look at all the songs on the record and they were all a challenge for me to get into. I just really like metal, and I love all the metal that’s being played now. I wish everybody would stop saying ‘djent’ though. That’s just dumb. It’s metal.” He also explained that while he could never leave the band it was a struggle to record this record.

In another Twitter rant, Kanye West announced he will release a new album this summer.

Quick News

Dr. Dre is producing and staring in a scripted series for Apple called Vital Signs. The show is semi-autobiographical to the the beat doctor's life and has already started shooting. No release date has been given.

Chino Moreno gave fans an insight into the new Deftones record by speaking to Kerrang about the upcoming Gore. He said: "If you look at the title and the artwork, it's about a juxtaposition that, for me, is very beautiful. I think Deftones have always flirted with dynamic and that yin-and-yang of things that are provocative and things that are beautiful. Where our last two album titles were a lot more optimistic, I think this title is intentionally different. This record is very different." He also added: "I do think we went in knowing that we wanted to make this record a little different from the last two. And I feel, definitely, like we did that. It's still a Deftones record — we didn't really have any new influences that changed that — but it's an expansion of what we were comfortable with. And it's important to get out of your comfort zone sometimes with the music — just to be excited. It's got a different look. A different shade of color. I'd say some shade of purple. I don't know why, but I think it sits somewhere between pink, red and purple. Sometimes when I hear music, I see color"
