No Distance Left to Run
We know we haven't been updating for most of 2018 and there is good reason for it.
November is usually the time we celebrate an anniversary of this website, which I started in my parents basement in 2006. It is also the time I felt was perfect to say goodbye. Officially A Yuppie has evolved and grew into something that I didn't think possible.
While the time working and putting everything into creating Officially A Yuppie was a massive adventure, it since got harder to do as I got older and holding down adult responsibilities.
The ride was all worth it as were the sleepless nights and stress, it taught me a lot and was one of the best learning experiences I could have ever asked for.
With that, it is time I call time on this project. It sorta feels like when a band goes on "indefinite hiatus" and you don't know when it they will be back but they aren't breaking up.
I can assure you the love for music will never die, in fact, we will return each year with at least a Top 10, honorable mentions, and League of Their Own list as we did when the site first launched. In fact, we will do that in the coming weeks for 2018.
Maybe there will be a band that we have to talk about or a gig or an album. Whatever the case may be, the site isn't shutting down but will be inactive until we feel like coming out of "retirement" for something.
Above all else, I just want to say thanks for reading, thanks for listening, thanks for keeping us going and that also goes for the musicians, publicists, managers, labels, and industry folk that saw us as an outlet to speak to.
Until next time, thanks for the last 12 years. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Best,
Sal

A Decade Under the Influence: 10 Albums For 10 Years
It is hard to imagine we have been doing this for 10 years. This website, blog, whatever you call it started in November 2006 when I was still living in my parents basement. I had graduated from college in May and still looking for work. I was a college radio DJ and many people kept asking me for new music, I figured a blog would be the best way to lay it all out.
In the decade we have been around, we may not have changed the landscape of anything but I am super proud of what we have accomplished. Having interviewed new artists from around the world and heroes like Mike D. of Beastie Boys, Dave Grohl, the Gallagher brothers, Bad Brains, Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye, among others, this has been a music nerds dream.
Within this decade, so many wonderful records have come out that shaped the course of music forever. Some of those records just shaped our souls. Here is a look back what I feel are the 10 best records to arrive since we started in November 2006.
10. The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound (2006)
The sophomore record from these Jersey punks struck a chord with us thanks to their heartfelt lyrics, throwback to arena rock sound that made them feel larger than life. A decade later, the record still resonates with its themes of growing up, leaving things behind and starting anew.
9. Amy Winhouse - Back to Black (2006)
Without Amy there would be no Adele. Without Amy the music world would be a lot less funky. It was as if the Ronnettes were fronted by a woman who was able to sing and speak her mind and not be told what to do. It was a record of love, loss and liberation and 10 years later, we still go back to black.
8. Against Me! - Transgender Dysphoria Blues (2014)
When Laura Jane Grace announced she was transitioning it shocked the music world due to her signature abrasive voice and style. Transgender Dysphoria Blues became a record of what it was like for her to realize what she needed to do and what needed to happen for her. It is a love letter to our bodies and the boldest, bravest statement in the history of music.
7. Robyn - Body Talk (2010)
When Robyn released her Body Talk series in 2010, the singer reinvented herself for a whole new audience. The spellbinding sounds of heartbreak and hip-hop mixed with Euro trash beats created one of the most loved albums of the decade.
6. Kanye West - Graduation (2007)
West broke hip-hop boundaries with Graduation and was, in my opinion, his final masterpiece. It was a transitional record that saw him sample Daft Punk, Elton John and call out Jay Z. It was a record that showed West had no boundaries and why, at that time, he was the most important name in music.
5. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (2007)
To sum up this whole record in with just one word - "Wow." Every band with one album out should take note, if you want to know how to define the sophomore slump and create a brilliant second disc, listen to Neon Bible. The Canadian 10 piece stormed back from their 2004 debut, Funeral, with a record about modern times. A much more mature album, they may have lost their random dance breakdown's in the middle of songs, but picked up a narrative writing style that rivals most poets. They express what they do not like in this world, our obsession with young celebrity, war, and how we respond to natural disaster. Their combination of folk and classical with a punk edge made them appeal to the masses.
4. Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 2 (2014)
Since 2012, independent New York producer and rapper extraordinaire El-P linked with Georgia emcee Killer Mike, these two have been making beautiful music together collaborating on their own albums and then coming together as Run The Jewels in 2013. heir debut was a great way to declare who they were and what they planned on doing, but it is the follow-up record that is their impact statement, their call to arms, their way of letting the world know they are not going anywhere. As Killer Mike proclaims on "Blockbuster Night Pt.1," "Last album voodoo, proved that we was fucking brutal," yet, is is the second album that takes that verbal and beat brutality to a whole other level. The only thing more aggressive than El-P’s beats is the sound of a black metal bands roaring guitars and that is not even touching on Killer Mike’s lyrical flow and words. What Killer Mike does on RTJ2 is become a hip-hop news commentator to tell us what it is like outside of our mindless lives and that we need to wake up, no wonder Zach de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine jumped on to work with these two to craft this dynamic, diverse, and brilliant record.
3. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly (2015)
Two days after the 20th anniversary of Tupac’s Me Against the World, Kendrick Lamar surprise released his sophomore album a week ahead of schedule and if anyone ever doubted that the Compton rapper could be the second coming of Pac, all doubts are officially pushed aside. Beautiful, raw, honest, intense, To Pimp A Butterfly is a modern poet putting social commentary and storylines over beats provided by the likes of Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Pharrell, Dr. Dre, among others. Clocking in at 80 minutes, which is long for any record, especially by today’s standards, Lamar lets his feelings about celebrity, love, the hood, and black culture out with a vengeance. Combining hip-hop, funk, jazz, psychedelica, and rock, Lamar defies the sophomore slump and proves he will not be pigeonholed. With lyrics about Trayvon Martin to Michael Jackson to Nelson Mandela, as well as his “interview” with Tupac, this record is a lyrical document of our times by a one-man verbal wrecking ball. It is an album that speaks to our times and a record that decades from now will still be the center of conversation. It became an instant classic and the soundtrack to a movement -- "We Gon' Be Alright!" was the anthem for those still fighting a struggle. The power and brilliance behind this record goes beyond it being the album of the year, it might become the album of the decade and one of the best we will ever hear in our lifetime. Hail, Hail King Kendrick!
2. Radiohead - In Rainbows (2007)
Maybe it is because they told EMI to fuck off, maybe it is because they realize the golden age of album collecting maybe coming to an end and we need to adapt, maybe it is because they are musical geniuses. Whatever it is, Radiohead are always ahead of their time and are always willing to take chances. In Rainbows is no exception, announcing on their website just a week before they intended to release the new material, Radiohead told fans "pay whatever you want," and even do whatever you want with it. Granted an established band like so has the ability to do so, but the fact they did it is just very cool. Aside from a unique distribution, the record also pushed the band to beyond the limits of their control and showcased their genius once more.
1. The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America (2006)
This is not the best record musically in comparison to others on this list, but in every sense of the world Boys and Girls in America changed my life. I first heard it a few months after it was released and was blown away. It was everything a confused early 20-something-year-old needed to hear. A decade later, it is everything a sorta confused 30-something-year-old needs to hear. Life is going to be okay and the plan you have may not happen right away but the adventure that takes you there is what makes or breaks you. Your heart will break, you heart will get filled, your life is something all of your own. The Hold Steady told me that with this record and whenever things feel strange, this is the record to put on.

Today marks another milestone for this little website, we celebrate our 9th anniversary!
It was nine years ago today that I sat in my parents basement in Long Island and created what was then "With This I Think I'm Officially A Yuppie," clearly some changes have been made to the site and name and we have interviewed hundreds of artists continue to go on.
Thanks for sticking with us all these years and keeping us going, we really appreciate it!
Also, most importantly, thanks to all the music and artists that really make us work to finding the best new sound and keeping what already has been given alive and classic.

has made this possible, in the coming weeks we will be running contests
and have a few special postings about our eight years as a music site!
In the meantime, we have a special announcement, this year we need your help picking our "Best New Artist" award. We began giving

In the past, winners have included James Blake, The Heartbreaks, The 1975, and now, it will be whoever you pick!
Now, as so many new artists have come out in 2014 and released a debut
record / EP that has stunned us in so many ways, we want to hear from you to
help us decide who the "Best New Artist of 2014" is. At the top of our

7 Year Anniversary
Seven years ago this weekend, this website started in a basement in my parent's house on the South Shore of Long Island. It has grown in ways I never ever thought possible. Gaining access to gigs, shaking hands with some of my musical heroes, landing a blogging gig at Huffington Post and at one point, the world's oldest magazine - The Spectator in England. This site has been like a child of mine and watching it grow and it being a passport to my passion has been incredible. From the bottom of my heart and all of my soul, thank you for reading and coming back. It really means the world to me and the small staff we have, we appreciate it.
Thank you again and here is to another year in the books!
Here is what some of our favorite artists have said about us in the past:
“One of the most fun-loving and forward-thinking blogs in the world, and run by one of the nicest guys in the business. Thank you Sal and Officially a Yuppie for getting in there so early with your support." Love from Chapel Club

"Sal and his peeps at OfficiallyAYuppie.com are doing an amazing job of covering fresh, creative music and the entire NYC scene! They're not too hip for the room, but definitely have hip taste." - Doug Wimbish, Living Colour

Six Year Anniversary
It is hard to imagine that it has been six years since the very first post went up on this website. Recently, while Hurricane Sandy pounded the East Coast we realized how lucky we are to be from this area. This site was born in a Long Island basement, then moved to Brooklyn and now, we call Queens home, we are proud to be from here and we are not going anywhere!
From the countless interviews and concerts we have covered, this train keeps rolling and we have you to thank for it. Thanks for reading, experiencing and looking at our words and thoughts. To all the artists, managers, labels, agents, publicists (There are too many of you to list), thanks for everything and all the help along the way.
To continue our celebration, here is what some of our favorites have said about us.

Our 5 Year Anniversary! Thank You!
I took all of this and ran with it when I got to college. I was a DJ for my campus radio station and I also was also music director then program director at WQAQ at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. After graduation, I was getting the same questions from former listeners to my show and fans and close friends as to what to hear, what to listen to and how a particular band in concert was. Feeling like I was constantly repeating myself, I opted to start a blog. For those that have been reading since the beginning you know it was the site www.salvatorebono.blogspot.com .
Just after a few months of starting the site in November 2006, one of my all-time favorite bands, Rage Against the Machine announced their reunion and I started writing news to the site and anything that interested me musically. In 2008, 90’s band Spacehog announced their reunion and I decided, “what the hell, ask them for an interview,” and so it happened. From there it was then finding any band that wanted to speak to me. For someone that had no idea what he was doing, I got lucky, my first interviews were with bands like Stellastarr*, Your Vegas, Thursday and in their first American interview – Glasvegas.
I never would have thought this would evolve into what it has become. From interviewing the likes of Henry Rollins, Yoko Ono, Peter Hook, Andy Rourke, Alan Wilder, Ian MacKaye, Bad Brains, Alec Empire, Portugal. The Man, Airborne Toxic Event, Incubus, The Vaccines and so on. In 2010 I was asked to write for Huffington Post and then The Spectator in UK and was also featured in the final Oasis album, Time Flies. This is all one big dream for me; to actually have a conversation with Liam Gallagher, speaking about Nirvana with Dave Grohl, doing push-ups with the guys in Nitzer Ebb backstage (yes, it happened and was hilarious), having and hearing The Heartbreaks dedicate their first New York appearance to me at Fashion Week or discussing something as simple as the weather in Chicago with Johnny Marr, never in my life would I have thought I would happen, but it has and I am extremely grateful and humble for all of it. Just this past year we launched Officially A Podcast hosted by managing editor, Bill Reese and it has expanded our audience and reach to a whole new medium and already it has taken off with special interviews with Nils Lofgren of the E-Street Band.
Officially A Yuppie is my love letter to great music. I get angry when I hear “music sucks today,” that statement could not be further from the truth. There are sounds out there that can shape anyone and I hope to provide that or point a reader in the right direction. To channel my passion of good music to your eyes and then iPods or whatever device you choose to listen to something.
So for those that has read it through the years, or just finding out about it, thank you. Thank you for reading my work and the work of my amazing (and very tiny but mighty) staff. A big thank you to all of the publicists, managers and of course, all of the bands for creating the wind that push our sails. It has been a fun and adventurous five years and I plan on having five and many more.
Thank you.

4 Year Strong! YUPPIE ANNIVERSARY!
Who would have guessed that this site would be going on and as strong four years after I started it? I for one did not think any of this would happen. With This I Think I’m Officially A Yuppie started in November 2006 and was just a site for friends of mine to look at for music and movie news, after all the URL used to be www.salvatorebono.blogspot.com - it was not even a proper site! Yet, things change and have changed for the better over time. This is now a full on music website that has been praised the world over, we have readers in every corner of the globe and the response is something I could not be prouder of. From our interviews with artists from all genres to our detailed and very attentive live reviews and fun album reviews, Officially A Yuppie I am proud to say, is becoming one of the net’s premiere music sites and I have YOU to thank for that. I have YOU to thank for reading it and coming back and giving us inspiration.
To all of the bands and artists that are putting out worthwhile music – thank you for inspiring my staff and I. We are living in such a great time of music, no matter what any other blogger may say, music today does not suck. It sucks if you are not looking for what you want, everything is at our fingertips in all genres and we are privileged to bring you some great acts. After all we are the first American website to interview Glasvegas, La Roux, Violent Soho and Chapel Club. You can also bet we have many more exclusives coming for you in the next year. While other site are talking about their hero’s we are chasing ours down speaking with and bring to you from Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye, Bouncing Souls, Johnny Marr, Living Colour, Bad Brains and we promise more legendary interviews in the coming months – your heads will blow off with who we have lined up! Even to celebrate our 4 years we are posting an AMAZING interview with the LEGENDARY ALEC EMPIRE of ATARI TEENAGE RIOT! Stay tuned!
We have also been talking to some of the best and biggest acts around like Portugal The Man, The Bravery, Airborne Toxic Event and The Drums.
To my staff that consists of some of the best correspondents and photographers in the business – thank you! Thank you for your time and hard work, I hope this is as much for you as it is for me and it is only going to get bigger and better!
To all of the artists, publicists, managers and labels thank you for all of your help and support! It means the world to us to have you in our corner of consideration!
To my friends and family, thank you for your input and guidance and encouragement, without you this whole adventure would have never started.
2010 has been an amazing year for us, we have given you an exclusive interview each week, brought you more live reviews and album reviews than ever before and the best wall to wall coverage of Lollapalooza 2010 more than any other website. It has also been a great year for me as I have been featured in one of my all time favorite bands – Oasis’ latest greatest hits record “Time Flies.” I have also been chosen to write not just for one but two of the world’s most prestigious sites – The Huffington Post in the US and The Spectator in the UK. Thank you for all that believe in me, my work and this site. I promise you are just seeing the beginning!
Best,
Salvatore Bono
