Portugal. The Man, Mister Holland's Opus Foundation Jam Together

Portugal. The Man joined forces with the students of Ron Russel Middle School in Portland, OR to record a special live version of "Feel It Still," all to benefit the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.

“We grew up in Alaska where music was not an option in school or life really. It is great to see Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation give these kids a chance we did not have. Not everyone is a mathematician or a scientist, some of us think a little different and this program encourages that,” says Portugal. The Man’s, Zach Carothers in a press statement.

The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation donates musical instruments and vital support services to under-funded school music programs across the country in an effort to give more students the many benefits of music education, help them achieve more in school and inspire creativity and expression through playing music.

Portugal. The Man Cover Oasis

Portugal. The Man are unapologetic Oasis fans and for years they have been covering the British band's "Don't Look Back in Anger" in concert. Now, they finally entered the studio and recorded what they say is a "stripped down version" of the classic for their YouTube page. Take a look!

Quick News

After reuniting for Riot Fest last year, The Misfits have announced their only concert of 2017 which will take place in LA on December 30. Fans are holding out for more shows next year. Take a look at the flyer, above.

Quicksand, who reunited in 2012, will release their first album in 22 years, Interiors, later this year. No official release date has been set.

LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy told the New York Times in a recent story that the reason the New York electronic band split in 2011 was to sell tickets to their Madison Square Garden concert that April. “My theory was, if I make it our last show, we’ll sell it out in two weeks,” he said. “It wasn’t a total lark, but it was a bit larky.” He said that the promoters of the show were afraid they would not sell out the venue and wanted a big opening act like Big Boi of Outkast, prompting Murphy to claim: "Why on earth would Big Boi open for us? Big Boi was in one of the biggest, most important hip-hop—no, one of the biggest and most important acts of all time. It didn’t make any sense. My theory was, if I make it our last show, we’ll sell it out in two weeks... It wasn’t a total lark, but it was a bit larky. But I like making decisions. I find it easy.”

St. Vincent talked to the New Yorker about her upcoming new album. In the interview she said that her ex-girlfriend, model Cara Delevigne, appears on the record and she worked with Jack Antanoff as a producer and Thomas Bartlette aka Doveman as an arranger for the LP. The record is apparently very autobiographical and deals with her emotions and anxieties. She recorded the record in New York while living out of a motel near Electric Lady Studios.

According to reports, Action Bronson is being toted as a late night host for the Viceland channel which he already has a series of shows including his hit, Fuck, That's Delicious. No word as to when the show will air or premiere but Bronson is releasing his new album, Blue Chips 7,000, Friday and showed off the tracklisting. Take a look:

File this under -- FUCK YES! Portugal. The Man are performing in Charlottesville tonight with The Dig and all of the proceeds from the show will go to relief efforts in the city following the atrocities last weekend.

Italian composure Daniele Luppi is teaming up with Parquet Courts to release a concept album called Milano, which will also feature Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The album is out in October via Danger Mouse's label 30th Century Records.

QUICK SPINS

SZA – Ctrl

The long-awaited debut from Top Dawg Entertainment’s top queen has finally arrived and SZA slices through every stigma any woman in hip-hop has ever faced. Arriving with one of the best debuts in recent memory, the rapper blends R&B, soul, funk, into her autobiographical LP. Featuring Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Isaiah Rashad, among others, she pulls her influences from Tupac to the Fugees to Odd Future to give the new school a taste of the old in an artistic manner.
FINAL GRADE: A

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Murder of the Universe

The second of three albums coming this year from the powerful and masterful Australian psyche band hears them progressing their vision just a bit further.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Portugal. The Man – Woodstock

It has been over four years since Portugal. The Man have released a new record which makes it the longest gap between music releases this band has had. That being said, the band take all of their influences from The Beatles, Oasis, and Wu-Tang and blend them together while still using their musical fingerprints to create a solid record that attracts new fans and pleases older ones.
FINAL GRADE: B+

The Drums – Abysmal Thoughts

Hands down the best Drums record since their fantastic 2010 debut. Johnny Pierce brings his surf rock meets 80s New Wave sound to new heights and clarity with his most succinct and sharpest lyrics as of yet. A perfect record for fun in the sun and sulking in a corner – which is the total opposite but Pierce makes it possible.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Color Film – Living Arraignments

Glassjaw, United Nations, Head Automatica frontman Darryl Palumbo debuted Color Film in 2014 and since then, the project has remained quiet until earlier this year when they announced they were finally putting a record out. Living Arraignments is a New Wave record done right for the 21st Century. Unlike the poppy neo-New Wave sound he created in Head Automatica, Palumbo makes Color Film’s music a bit more dramatic but just as interesting.
FINAL GRADE: B+

London Grammar – Truth is a Beautiful Thing

The long awaited sophomore record from the moody London trio has arrived and singer Hannah Reid sores beyond all expectations on how she utilizes her voice. The lengthy record is a lot to digest in one sitting and her lyrics about breakup and hope resonate with anyone but it is how she showcases that unique voice of hers that captures everyone’s attention.  The record does need a song that needs to be not dramatic and a pop single but maybe we can hold out hope for those on album No. 3.
FINAL GRADE: B

Lana Del Rey – Lust For Life

It was pretty bold for Del Rey to name her third record after the iconic Iggy Pop album of the same name but she separates herself from the pack. She still brings the moody and dark tones of her previous LPs but this record does project the sound of hope and someone yearning to be heard.
FINAL GRADE: B

Beth Ditto – Fake Sugar

The long awaited debut album from the former Gossip frontwoman gives us something that is not only her most personal work to date but something of a glam, funk, country, pop record. Ditto tries it all on Fake Sugar and succeeds most of the time.
FINAL GRADE: B

Roger Waters – Is This The Life You Really Want?

After nearly 20 years, the former Pink Floyd bassist has returned with a new solo album and it comes at the perfect time. Waters’ timing could not be more perfect. With everything that is going on in the world, the outspoken activist has channeled his anger in a record that is both a gift to fans but much needed for our era.
FINAL GRADE: B

Slowdive

After 22 years, Slowdive return with a new album that marks their unique shoegaze sound going into a new era.
FINAL GRADE: B

Royal Blood – How Did We Get So Dark?

The British rock duo return with their second record and pick up right where they acclaimed debut left off. Packed with more thunderous riffs and stadium sized songs, Royal Blood are one of the only true new rock and roll bands around and they don’t even have a guitar.
FINAL GRADE: B

Ride – Weather Diaries

21 years since they last graced us with their pioneering shoegaze sound, Ride returns right where they left off. This go around, however, it feels as if Andy Bell took some of the queues he got while playing in Oasis and crafted some anthems for the jilted generation.
FINAL GRADE: B

Fleet Foxes – Crack-Up

The Seattle lo-fi band return with a record that makes you wonder if nature had a soundtrack what would it be? The answer: Crack-Up.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Dan Auerbach – Waiting on a Song

The Black Keys frontman goes solo for the second time with a blues record that gives him a little more room to breathe from his main band. Auerbach has a command over his songwriting but still sticks to the style we have all grown accustomed to.
FINAL GRADE: B-

KMFDM – Yeah! EP

The fact that KMFDM are still creating pulse pounding beats, songs, and heavy riffs as they get older is an accomplishment on its own. The German industrial legends return with an EP that still sticks to the blueprint of what they have created over the years but also pushes them into the modern era as well as making them one of the most aggressive and loudest acts still around.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Jeff Tweedy – Together At Last

The Wilco frontman goes solo and crafts an Americana record that only he could make.
FINAL GRADE: B-

 Alt-J – Relaxer

It is a new Alt-J record. Have you heard the previous two? Well, then you also heard their latest.
FINAL GRADE: D

Phoenix – Ti Amo

The French alternative rockers return with a new record and take inspiration from Italian disco, which they carry, that motif out through their entire collection of latest tunes. However, the issue with this album is that they should have hired Giorgio Moroder or Nile Rodgers to aide them with how to create a funky sound because this record not only lacks energy it takes such an exciting subgenre that is full of life and kills it.
FINAL GRADE: D

Live Review: Portugal. The Man at Rough Trade

Just days after releasing their new album, Woodstock, their eighth, Portugal. The Man performed a last-minute in-store performance at Rough Trade in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Read Our 2011 Interview with Portugal. The Man

The Portland, Oregon via Wasilla, Alaska band were just in the city two weeks ago for two sold-out shows at the 3,000-plus Terminal 5, yet on Tuesday, just under 300 fans got in for the intimate performance featuring their new touring line-up.

Opening with "Purple Yellow Red Blue," the fans, who many waited in the blistering sun all day for the 45-minute show, screamed the words back to the band. Singer John Baldwin Gourley, dressed like Bernie from Weekend at Bernies, we are kidding but he could have passed, didn't speak much to the crowd and let his bassist and co-founding member Zach Carothers do all the talking in between tracks.

In a set that featured many of their previous hits like "So American," "Modern Jesus," "Evil Friends," clearly got the most applause but they worked in new tracks like "Feel It Still" and "So Young," into their starkly lit set.

Listen to Our 2009 Interview with Portugal. The Man

To see this band through the years evolve in their style and sound as well as in popularity, these smaller in-store appearances are more than just reliving the old days of this band, who are still as hungry as ever, but a moment to savor something that could never happen again.

Quick News

The Kickback will release their sophomore album, Weddings and Funerals, this summer. Take a look at the cover, above.

Haim announced that their new album, Something to Tell You, will be out in July.

KMFDM will release their new EP, YEAH!, in June. Take a look at the cover, below:

Iggy Pop was presented with France's highest cultural honour the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by French Consul General, earlier in the week. Congrats, Iggy!

Speaking to Zane Lowe on his Beats Radio 1 show, Matt Healey of The 1975 announced that the band's new album, Music For Cars, will arrive later this year. "Music for Cars has always been called that, and we were always gonna do a trilogy of records," he said. "And I'm not saying that after this album it's the end of the 1975, but it's definitely the end of an era."

Portugal. The Man have announced that their new album, Woodstock, will arrive in June. The record features production from Danger Mouse, and Beastie Boy Mike D. Take a look at the cover, below:

It has been a big week for Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett as the new Gorillaz album, Humanz, has finally arrived and the singer had a massive press week where he dove in on everything from Blur, Gorillaz, and working with Noel Gallagher. So, we will bullet point the highlights:
  • As far as a new Blur record goes, the singer said he is unsure if the Britpop band will make another record. He told Rolling Stone: "We’re all really good friends. And I feel like I’ve given many of my best years to Blur, so I don’t feel guilty in that sense. I’ve never said I’d never make another record. It’s all the same thing at the end of the day. It’s the nuances that make it different. It’s just more music, to add to the mountain of music there already is.”
  •  Hewlett told Exclaim that a Gorillaz animated series is finally in the works and will air next year. "I’ll direct the first and the last one, but we’ll have to get someone in to direct the other episodes. I think even attempting to do it all by myself will kill me." He added: "Everybody does CGI now, and it is great when you’re making backgrounds, like environments and landscapes, but not the actual characters. I’m still very much inspired by the work of Chuck Jones, and I love that animation. It’s art. I’d like to keep the characters in that style for the rest of this campaign. So the characters on the show will be 2D, but everything else is up for grabs.”
  • Finally, Noel Gallagher revealed to Vulture that he invited Damon Albarn to play on his new solo record but they are unsure if he can do it because it all depends on their schedules. Gallagher, who was once rivals with Albarn, appears on the new Gorillaz album and was asked by Vulture what he thinks his brother, former Oasis singer, Liam Gallagher, would think of him performing on the record, the "Mighty I" singer replied: "Listen, nobody gives a fuck what Liam thinks about anything.”
That of course did not sit well with Liam, who took to Twitter and said:

Officially A Icon: Danger Mouse

Eleven years ago, when Jay Z announced his "retirement" a relatively unknown producer crafted a mash-up album using the biggest rapper and the greatest band of all time. Combining The Beatles White Album and HOV's Black Album, this unknown and ballsy producer named Danger Mouse wowed and rocked the music world with The Grey Album.

Since then, the man born Brian Burton has done everything from produce for artists like Portugal. The Man, U2, Gorillaz, The Good, The Bad, and the Queen, Beck, The Black Keys, Norah Jones. He has collaborated with David Lynch, DOOM, Sparklehorse, Jemini. Formed bands with The Shins' James Mercer with Broken Bells, hit blockbuster status with Cee-Lo in Gnarles Barkley, and scored an opera that featured Jack White and Norah Jones. Mouse can do it all and do it with a sense of cool that has been unseen in modern music.

Just this year alone, Broken Bells released a new LP, his latest Black Keys produced album arrived and his long await production work with U2 came to the surprise of everyone in September. Now, with all of this, it is the reason why Danger Mouse will join the ranks of Renaissance artists like Damon Albarn, Questlove, and Karen O., and is the fourth recipient of this accolade that makes him this year's Icon.

Live Review: Portugal. The Man / Grouplove @ Rumsey Playfield

When you woke up this morning and saw the weather, going to an outdoor concert was the last thing on your mind. As the wind picked up, temperature dropped and rain fell in typical unforgiving New York fashion, standing outside would be the last of your plans on a Tuesday in September. Then, just as quickly and as hard as the rain came, it all cleared up and blue skies suddenly appeared and like the rain, all of those doubts about your evening plans suddenly went away. The Honda Civic Tour co-headlined by Portugal. The Man and Grouplove pulled into Rumsey Playfield in Central Park and was the final outdoor concert of the 2014 season.

At 7 p.m. sharp, Grouplove took the stage to bring their jam band-meets-soul-rock inspired groves to the park. The band, who were in town exactly six months ago, brought the same energy, fun, and joy they did to Terminal 5 but this time on their outdoor set. With enough laser beam lights to signal a satellite in the sky, Grouplove had the crowd in pure in pure bliss. Singer and guitarist Christian Zucconi cut off his normal long locks for a crew cut looked like a totally different person on stage, while singer and keyboarding Hannah Hooper wore a Beyonce inspired outfit, kept telling the crowd, "This night is bittersweet for us. It is the last night of the tour and we really have become like family with Portugal. The Man." While her look liked like Queen Bey's, the band also paid tribute to the singer with a rousing performance of "Drunk in Love." With nearly all of their singles played and Zucconi and Hooper feeding off the crowds energy, dancing around, jumping into the audience and bouncing on stage, it was a fantastic way to shake off your end of work jitters. After an hour on stage, they retreated to wings, only to come back a few moments later with members of Portugal. The Man for an encore of The Who's "Baba O'Reilly." The cover song motif would last through the night as Portugal. The Man would show during their performance.

After a 30-minute break between bands, Portugal. The Man walked on stage at 8:30 and instead of breaking out into one of their own numbers, they jumped into a cover of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2," which then would become the long intro to "Purple Yellow Red and Blue," it was then straight into "All Your Light." Just as they were warming up within their set, they broke out "Evil Friends," which included a cover of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's "Dayman," thrown into the mix. With trippy images being projected behind them and the same laser lights Grouplove used were now being blasted into the crowd for a different band. As a majority of the songs coming off last year's fantastic Evil Friends and 2011's In The Mountain In The Cloud, the band were playing their largest show to date in New York City. Bassist Zach Carothers would express the same sentiments as Hannah Hooper did explaining to the crowd how important this tour was for them and how it brought on a family like atmosphere between the two bands. While the songs always sound fantastic live from this band, one of the amazing things about them is how you can see them nearly every night of the week and it will always be a different concert. We have been covering this band consistently since 2009 and never have we left a gig of theirs disappointed or underwhelmed, they known how to put on a great show and pack a surprise. One of those surprises was a cover of Oasis' "Don't Look Back in Anger," which had all of Rumsey Playfield singing along to the chorus. Carothers joked, "We wrote that song a long, long time ago." While their main set, like Grouplove, lasted an hour, they retreated to the wings and returned for an encore that sent the audience to the heavens. Carothers and singer John Baldwin Gourley came out again to thank everyone on the tour and express their gratitude to everyone involved and how much they love New York City, "This is the greatest city in the world," Gourley said before breaking into the opening chords of "Sleep Forever," which lead to a gigantic build-up that brought them singing The Beatles' "Hey Jude." As you walked out of the park and the bands were long off stage, the crowd was still chanting "Nah, nah, nah, naaah! Hey Jude!," as they returned home.
