Live Review: Interpol Close House of Vans
On Friday night, Interpol performed a very special record release show for their latest album, the very solid, Marauder.
The gig was the final concert ever inside Williamsburg, Brooklyn's House of Vans skate park. For the last 8 years, Vans has supplied a venue for locals to not only skate around in but also attend free concerts each and every summer since it opened.
For the final gig, the sneaker company signed local heroes Interpol to close out venue and what a way to say goodbye.
Leading up to the band's set, many inside the packed venue were sharing stories about how the House of Vans became a summertime staple for them to not only see bands, drink free beer, and skate around but it was a place of unity in the neighborhood and for those around New York City. The venue attracted characters from all walks of life and Friday everyone was on full display from the middle aged skater to the young hipster who just moved to the neighborhood to the student to the professional and even the elderly, as an elderly woman was seen spotted at the show. It was a bittersweet moment for all which led to Interpol's Paul Banks to express his gratitude as much as he could for be allowed to headline and curate the important event.
Hitting the stage just before 10 p.m., the dapper Manhattan band opened with "Number 10," a track from their brand new record but then dove into the hits like "All the Rage Back Home," "Evil," "Public Pervert," "NYC," as well as mixing in new songs like "The Rover," "NYSMAW," "Complications," which fit in just fine.
It was the kick-off of a small tour for the band but they looked relaxed and well rehearsed to make some of their new songs come alive for the first time all while holding the audiences attention.
Guitarist Daniel Kessler would dance around stage while singer Paul Banks would show off his unique and powerful voice to the delight of everyone in the room. Drummer Sam Fogarino is still holding his own as the backbone of the band they sound as tight as ever.
As Marauder is set to take them around the world to tour, the band will be back in New York in February where they headline Madison Square Garden.

Recommended Reading: 'Meet Me in the Bathroom'
The greatest book about music and New York City is the classic Please Kill Me which is the oral history of the birth of punk in the 1970s. Last year, a spiritual sequel of sorts was released by author Lizzy Goodman who documented the New York City garage and indie scene of the turn of this century with the brilliant and instant classic Meet Me in the Bathroom.
Meet Me in the Bathroom is the oral history of those who lived in New York pre and post-9/11 and how the city was shaped by the artistic boom coming from the Lower East Side and eventually spilled over to Brooklyn. With first person accounts from The Strokes, Ryan Adams, LCD Soundsystem, Interpol, TV on the Radio, The National, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the artists discuss their origins and how things progressed for them to get to the status they are currently at. Goodman takes us on a tour of the city in the way she formulates the interviews to flow like a narrative and timeline of places and events which transpired over the years. Meet Me in the Bathroom is not just a love letter to New York City, it is a love letter to rock and roll and how in every generation the cycle will not destruct and for better or worse keeps pushing. This is for any music fan.

Live Review: Interpol at Forest Hills Stadium
After touring Europe for the summer celebrating the 15th anniversary of their landmark debut, Interpol turned on the bright lights for a hometown show of sorts in Queens, New York.
As fans packed into the historic Forest Hills Tennis Stadium Saturday night, the slick indie rockers from the Lower East Side were in high spirits to play the record that not only launched their career but also show that New York City still had something to say in the music world following the attacks on 9/11. The night before they performed a much more intimate setting and familiar one at that as they sold-out Bowery Ballroom in a last minute warm-up show marking the occasion the first official time the band performed Turned on the Bright Lights in full in the city.
Saturday was bigger, broader, and much more of a spectacle as it was the largest venue the band have headlined in nearly a decade after they were topped billing at Madison Square Garden following the release of Our Love to Admire. As the years went on, the band went through lineup changes as bassist Carlos D. famously left in 2010 and the had a handful of sub par records before really returning to form with 2014's El Pintor. Yet, Saturday night wasn't about their future or how they "returned" it was about celebrating their past.
What an amazing night in @Interpol's home city, hearing their debut album #TurnOnTheBrightLights in its entirety. #ForestHillsStadium pic.twitter.com/WFp3piTHHh— Forest Hills Stadium (@ForestHillsStdm) September 24, 2017
As they walked on stage nearly a half hour than when they were estimated to hit the stage, Interpol strutted in their signature black suits, and performed in front of a backdrop that resembled the one on the cover to Turn on the Bright Lights. As they started with "untitled" and then brought it all the way through from start to finish with "Leif Erikson," the fans inside, now, like the band and music, older and wiser, were reliving a special part of their lives and what this record means to the cannon of New York City rock and roll. Everyone in attendance chanted back every word and held their attention this special occasion as they focused on the show, though expected at a concert is something rare to see in 2017.
"This song was always clumped into the Turn on the Bright Lights songs, so we are gonna play it," a bearded Paul Banks said as soon as they finished playing their infamous debut and jumped into "Specialist," a B-side written during the sessions of the record in Connecticut 15 years ago.
After a brief break, the five-piece came back on stage and went into "Not Even Jail," "Slow Hands," "Lights" and the fantastic "All the Rage Back Home." Banks looked at his watch and the band seemed ready to play another song but due to a strict 10 p.m. curfew, they were cut short. Allegedly songs like "Evil" and "The Heinrich Maneuver" were slated to be played but had to be axed due to time. It seems as if they shot themselves in the foot going on stage later than expected, however, for everything in attendance it wasn't about greatest hits or a regular Interpol gig, it was celebrating a record that helped define a city in crisis.
What a privilege, New York. Thank you!— Interpol (@Interpol) September 24, 2017

"I don’t think it’s likely that he’s going to reach out. I really think Carlos is doing his own thing now. I understand why people would be interested in that, but the reality is, the social dynamic ... is that I don’t have any contact with Carlos," he said.

In March, Peter Murphy will release his new live album, Bare Boned and Sacred, which was recorded inside New York's Le Poisson Rouge during his recent acoustic and unplugged tour.
Interpol have confirmed that they are working on a new record that will come out in 2018.
U2 are set to embark on the 30th anniversary of The Joshua Tree in the summer and bassist Adam Clayton tells Rolling Stone that fans can expect to hear new songs from the forthcoming Songs of Experience. He said: "It would be very much my wish that we could play something from Experience as part of the show, maybe one or two songs. Again, I caution that by saying we really have to see the arc of this show and we have to figure out whether those Experience songs would work well in a stadium in this context, but I'd love to see some of that material out there and people being familiar with it before the album comes out." He also said that the events of Brexit and Trump's presidential victory have postponed the new record from arriving and inspired new material. He said: "In the course of that year, some kind of strange political movements seemed to start happening. First of all, there was Brexit in the U.K., which was just a signal that things were changing. I'm not sure how people took it. Then, quite quickly on the back of it, was the rise of Trumpism. And that was like, "Oh, OK, there's something going on here. There's maybe something we missed and we need to start watching this." That sort of encouraged us to go away from trying to finish the record too quickly without being able to factor in some of the things this is telling us."
James Hetfield spoke to Straits Times and said that Metallica fans will not have to wait another eight years like they did with their excellent new album, Hardwired...To Self Destruct to hear new music. Hetfield said waiting that long to put out a record was "a mistake."
Members of Prophets of Rage such as Tom Morello, B-Real, and Brad Wilk all took to Instagram to confirm that the supergroup is in the studio working on new music.
The wife of the late David Bowie, former supermodel Iman, took to Instagram to break the news that the Royal Mail will feature the "Heroes" singer's face on an upcoming collection of stamps in the UK.

Adele gave some insider info to Vanity Fair about the writing of her latest, 25, saying: "Having a hangover with a child is torture." She explained that the hangover came from her time drinking when she wrote and recorded her mega classic, 21. The singer said: "I used to love to be drunk, but as I got more famous I would wake up the next morning and think, ‘What the fuck did I say and who the fuck did I say it to?’ I never had blackouts, but when you’re drunk and you go to a party, you’ll talk to anyone. I can see from an outsider’s perspective that I will never write songs as good as the ones that are on ’21’, but I’m not as indulgent as I was then, and I don’t have time to fall apart like I did then. I was completely off my face writing that album, and a drunk tongue is an honest one. I would drink two bottles of wine, and I would chain-smoke. Then I’d write the lyrics down and the next morning think, ‘Fuck, that’s quite good’. Then I’d find the melody.”
Interpol have teased fans with a return to the studio. The band could be writing and recording their sixth album after posting something coy on Twitter.

Afghan Whigs guitarist Dave Rosser has been diagnosed with colon cancer. The band announced 2 concerts, one in L.A. and one in New Orleans, later this month to help pay for his medical costs. In a statement, Whigs leader Greg Dulli said: "Dave Rosser has been my close friend and bandmate for over a decade now. By doing these shows for him we hope to ease any financial stress he may face as he pursues treatment to combat his illness. 100% of the proceeds for these shows will go to his medical care. I’m hopeful that folks will come out and show their support for Dave who will be performing with us.”
In his new autobiography, Set the Boy Free, Johnny Marr discusses how in 2008 he and Morrissey almost reformed The Smiths. The ball was in motion then suddenly Moz stopped returning the guitarist's calls for a reunion. Now, speaking to Radio 4, Marr said he is not interested in a reunion anymore. "People just don’t want to let go of this fractured band business,” he said. “You know, we were never gonna be together for 30-40 years. We weren’t REM, we weren’t U2, you know it’s just nonsense. We had 70 songs in the bank. That was enough. I’ll get on with doing movies and making records with other people and which is what I always wanted to do. So, I’m very happy with the way everything turned out.”
Iggy Pop has returned to the studio to work on the follow-up to his fantastic Post Pop Depression album. Telling Entertainment Weekly: "I’ve made five recordings since then…But they were all recordings not where I’m about, ‘Hey, I’ve got something to say!’ No, it was just, people called me up and said, ‘Do you want to do a vocal with me, about this, under this circumstance?’ More like guesting. I would prefer to do that for a while. You know, there are people I like. I like the people I’ve recorded with — I can’t tell you who they are! — very much."

Live Review: Banks & Steelz at Bowery Ballroom
Banks & Steelz, the new project featuring Interpol's Paul Banks and Wu-Tang Clan's RZA made their New York City debut Thursday night. The two New Yorkers, who have just started a small tour to support their debut album, Anything But Words, in their 3rd stop they did a hometown throw down.
Surprisingly, the intimate venue was not sold-out, however, those that were in attendance did experience something special. On the record, Banks is the star of the show with his swelling voice and clever lyrics, in concert, it is all RZA. The Staten Island-born musician had all of Bowery Ballroom in the palm of his hand. The 2 dapper gentlemen where backed by a drummer and produced enough sound that it felt as if there were 20 people on stage at points.
With special guests Kool Keith, who opened the show, and Joan As a Police Woman, the eclectic and unlikely duo are a force to be reckoned with on stage. It remains to be seen if they will ever tour again and do this project, but if they don't, everyone inside the Bowery got a treat.

QUICK SPINS
Frank Ocean – Blond
After all of the waiting, guessing games and curiosity,
Frank Ocean returns. In a surprise move he released the visual album, Endless,
and his proper record, Blond. The album, which gives listeners a further taste
of the singer’s soul is also highly charged with what is going to
African-Americans in this country. Blond is an ambitious album that at some
points leaves you uncomfortable and other times makes you believe you have
known Ocean your whole life. Some things are worth waiting for, a Frank Ocean
record such as this is one of them.
FINAL GRADE: A
Har Mar Superstar – Best Summer Ever
Some records fall through the cracks and it takes a while to
get to them and review, for Har Mar Superstar’s latest, Best Summer Ever, it
was like that for us. It came across our attention months after being released
and all we can say is PLEASE DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS RECORD LIKE WE DID!
FINAL GRADE: A
Blu & Nottz – Titans in the Flesh
The dynamic duo of Blu and Nottz team up for an epic
combination of glory hip-hop. The only issue with the EP is that it is too
short, hopefully this leads to a full album among the two underground giants.
FINAL GRADE: A-
Dinosaur Jr. – Give a Glimpse Of What Yer Not
Like most things in 2016, the best things to come out this
year are from seasoned veterans and icons. Dinosaur Jr. return with what could
be their best record in decades. It is everything we have come to love about
them over the years but better.
FINAL GRADE: A-
Maxwell – blackSUMMERS’night
The smooth R&B crooner and for a while was filling the
Frank Ocean-sized void in the genre. blackSUMMERS’night is sexy, seductive,
mysterious and introspective. It is a record that will make you wanna make love
and a record that will also make you want to find yourself at the same time.
FINAL GRADE: A-
DJ Khaled – Major Key
DJ Khaled is to music what the Kardashians are to TV. They
are all famous for being famous and clearly have some sort of talent, but
nothing the warrants the status they have. On Major Key, Khaled called in every
favor and friend he could in order to make one of the summer’s most slamming
albums. With verses from Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, J. Cole, Future, Rick Ross,
Nas, among others, the record is a major key in Khaled’s career. Also, give us
that new fucking Nas record album! ;)
FINAL GRADE: B+
Of Montreal – Innocence Reaches
The flamboyant and envelope-pushing Of Montreal return with
a record that adds to their storied career but doesn’t do more than just that.
FINAL GRADE: B
Ingrid Michaelson – It Doesn’t Have to Make Sense
The New York singer returns with personal record that proves
why she is one of the best to ever do it. It Doesn’t Have to Make Sense is
heartbreaking as it is kind. It is personal as it is expressive. Above all, it
is one for anyone going through hard times.
FINAL GRADE: B
De La Soul – And The Anonymous Nobody
After 11 years, the hip-hop icons return with a concept
record about today’s society. While this crowd-funded, sample free album is all
new territory for the pioneers it is not what we would have expected. With
guests like Snoop Dogg, Damon Albarn, Little Dragon and others, this album is
interesting but not one we feel we will be returning to.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Banks & Steelz – Anything But Words
The combination of Interpol’s Paul Banks and Wu-Tang’s RZA
would be odd on paper, but the manage to pull it off. While RZA shows his age
as a rapper, Banks’ voice is the real star of the show. With special guests
like Florence Welch, Ghostface, Kool Keith and others, this debut is
interesting and worth a listen.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Melvins – Basses Loaded
The Melvins return with an ode to the bass, seriously, it is
chock full of bassists and it packs a punch.
FINAL GRADE: B-
The Living End – Shift
The Australian punks return with a record of more rockabilly
thrash and social commentary.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Gone Is Gone
Members of Mastodon, At the Drive-In and Queens of the
Stone Age team up for a pulse pounding debut EP that leaves you guessing what
they will do for a possible full length.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Young the Giant – Home of the Strange
Young the Giant had so much promise as a rising alternative
band but after a strong debut, everything after has been mundane and
disappointing. Home of the Strange just adds to a collection of mediocre songs
and radio-friendly type hooks.
FINAL GRADE: C
Schoolboy Q – Blank Face
After a strong debut 2 years ago, Schoolboy Q returns with a
murky and dramatic sophomore release that takes a few listens to really get
into. While it deals with so many important topics facing America today and
what goes on in the inner cities, it doesn’t pack the punch it ultimately
should.
FINAL GRADE: C

Banks & Steelz (AKA RZA & Interpol's Paul Banks) Announce Debut LP
The debut album from Wu-Tang Clan's RZA and Interpol frontman Paul Banks aka Banks & Steelz, Anything But Words, will arrive in August.
RZA told Pitchfork how the unlikely New York artists came together in a recent interview. He said: "I was in New York at the time. Paul was in New York, and my manager—I don’t know exactly what happened. I know I was smoking a lot of weed during that period. All I know is that I met him at a tequila bar, I remember that. And once we met it was just two New York musicians connecting. That was really the foundation of it. My manager was a fan of Interpol’s work and he got me familiar with it as well, so it was more like two musicians hooking up, breaking bread, and just vibing out in the city."
