Desaparecidos Announce 1st Album in 13 Years!

For the first time in 13 years, Conor Oberst's punk band The Desaparecidos will release a new record. The band, who put out Read Music / Speak Spanish in 2002, will finally put out their sophomore LP, Payola, in June. 

The band were on hiatus in the mid 2000's and reformed in 2010, this is the first new music since that reformation. Take a look at the cover, above, and the tracklisting, below, and hear the first single "City on the Hill."

Speaking to XXL, John Singleton, the director of the forthcoming Tupac biopic has said that the project is now on hold. He said, "I’m putting my involvement on hold right now because we’re trying to figure out some things. I got a script and I got the blessings from his family. We’ll see…. We’ve got to get it right. I think the picture is not going to be good unless it’s offensive to some people. When I’m making my movies, John Singleton movies, it’s really just my voice. So I can’t be listening to all the other suggestions of all these other people and shit.”

Kurt Vile will release his new album, All Over The Place, later this year according to Rolling Stone.

Rising Artist: Tricot

Even though the world is so connected these days and becomes increasingly smaller, sometimes you can still get surprised to find something new even when it has been out for a bit. That is the case with Japan's Tricot. A trio of kick-ass females who combine math-rock sensibilities and center it around their singer Ikkyu Nakajima's unique vocals and range. The DIY band are a hit in the Japanese underground, and with a few EP's and their 2013 debut, have all been self-released and received much acclaim in their native land. Now, as they look to make a splash internationally, it doesn't matter if you don't know what they are saying, it is proving that our universal language is giving us new frontiers.

Underrated Classic: Scott Weiland '12 Bar Blues'

As Scott Weiland is back in the music news with his new band The Wildabouts, who just released their debut album, we look back at the troubled singer's underrated solo debut. In 1998, at the height of Stone Temple Pilots' career, the band went on hiatus. Weiland, who has constantly battled all sorts of addiction through his whole professional career, parted ways with the band that gained him fame. The remaining members of STP formed the ill-fated Talk Show, and Weiland released 12 Bar Blues. The record, a David Bowie meets post-grunge sound, became Weiland's emotional release. The album meanders into various places that takes us not just into heart but into the soul of a man who had never been so personal before. In the song, "Barbarella," Weiland sings, "Grab a scale of all the pain I have given with my name. I am a selfish piece of shit." Songs like "Son," "Lady, Your Roof Brings Me Down," "Desperation #5," took one of the 90's most prolific front men and rock and rollers and made him human. This record could have never been made with STP, but the fact that it was crafted and put out there, it legitimized Weiland as a songwriter and singer. 12 Bar Blues was a commercial flop but managed the critical acclaim that he may not have gotten with his day job.

Movie of the Month: Saboteur

The master of suspense, Sir Alfred Hitchcock always outdid himself especially within the middle of his career that gave way for films like Rebecca, Lifeboat, Rope, Dial M For Murder, Vertigo, Rear Window,  and Pyscho. In 1942, 73 years ago this month, he gave the world one of the best espionage thrillers that ever graced the silver screen with Saboteur. The film takes centers around a factory worker in World War II that is accused of setting fire to a hanger and causing it to explode. While the protagonist tries to defend his innocence, he goes on the path to find the person he believes is responsible for the act of treason. In a film that has so many twists, turns, and excitement, it is no wonder, even over 70 years ago, that the summer blockbuster was born in April. Even after all these years, the film still resonates with audiences and manages to keep a timeless appeal to what would become the blueprint to blockbuster films.
