Rising Artist: Felicity
Pop can be a dirty word because it immediately indicates commercial, prefabricated packaged bullshit but if and when it is done right it can sound what it is intended to do -- make you feel good and bop around. Welcome Cape Town, South Africa's Felicity who is making smart pop that not only has clever lyrics but also very catchy hooks. The singer began releasing music last year and has had a number of singles climb the charts in her native country. The 18-year-old was born in Australia but raised in Cape Town and has echoes of Marina and the Diamonds and Ellie Goulding, while she doesn't have any plans for a debut album, based on the singles she has out, it will be something to watch out for if and when it does arrive.
Underrated Classic: Fratellis 'Costello Music'
In the middle part of the 2000s first decade, it felt as if there was a third British invasion as bands from the UK like Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian, The Libertines, Babyshambles, were all kicking down America's door. One of those bands, Scotland's The Fratellis came onto the scene like a firecracker and were everywhere. The trio released their fantastic debut, Costello Music in 2006 in the UK, nearly six months later, it arrived across the pond and was inescapable. The band's single, "Flathead" was everywhere from iPod commercials to shopping malls to commercial radio, and no one seemed to get tired of it. The record which the song came from also was just as catchy and solid as the single. Costello Music was the perfect garage rock album with catchy hooks, fun choruses, and an energy that wasn't seen in many of the new bands coming from England. They referenced Oasis, loved the Stones and Stone Roses, it was everything people loved about the generation of Britrock before them and put out in a loud package. Now, a decade later, the band's popularity seems to have plateaued but are still putting out quality records, however, none have failed to capture the market like Costello Music.
Movie of the Month: 'Beats, Rhymes, & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest'
This time last year, A Tribe Called Quest released their first album in almost 20 years and 2016's best record -- We Got It From Here... Thank You For Your Service. The iconic hip-hop outfit from Queens put aside their differences and fired back with one of the greatest comeback records in history. Sadly, they lost founding member Phife Dawg in the process. In 2011, fans got to see how turbulent the members of the group were with one another as well as saw how severe Phife's issues with diabetes was in the documentary Beats, Rhymes, and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest. The film, directed by Michael Rappaport, not only detailed an oral history of how the group formed with stories from members Phife, Q-Tip, Jarobi, and Ali Shaheed Muhammed, it also showcased how they changed hip-hop forever. Rappaport took fans into Q-Tip's think tank and record collection to see where he discovered samples, they go back to the high school they all met in, as well as openly discuss their problems with each other on their 2009 reunion tour. While the film ends with the groups second break-up, it almost feels as if in the years since a second part needs to be made including that of their "farewell" concert to New York City in 2013 when they opened for Kanye West at Madison Square Garden to their reunion making their final record, as well as the passing of Phife Dawg and how they carried on for 2017 without him. The film is their story presented by a fan for Day 1 fanatics as well as novices to the group.
