Great Soundtracks: 'Judgement Night'
Before there was "rap rock" or bullshit "nu metal," there was the Judgement Night soundtrack. The music to the 1993 thriller had an interesting concept and one that was far ahead of its time -- take the most popular rock bands of the era and the most acclaimed hip-hop acts and have them do mash-ups together. This album created the cross-genre / mash-up hybrid.
Taking Pearl Jam and Cypress Hill, Helmet / House of Pain, Teenage Fanclub / De La Soul, Living Colour & Run DMC, Dinosaur Jr. with Del the Funky Homosapian, Sonic Youth with Cypress Hill, Slayer and Ice-T, it wasn't something that was done at the time. It was also something that was helping break down racial bariers within 90s sounds. It was mainly white kids from the suburbs getting their teenage angst out with garage rock and grunge and it was mainly black kids relating to what emcees had to say. While Ice-T had already dabbled in metal thanks to Body Count, this wasn't too much of a stretch for him, however, linking up with Slayer was a change.
While the songs may sound dated today, the soundtrack's importance and bravery needs to be applauded. This could have failed miserably both critically and commercially but was a success on all fronts.

Movie of the Month: 'West of Memphis'
In 2011, after years of work from activists and celebrities, the West Memphis Three were released from prison after 18 years. In 2012, the culmination of their story was told in the heartbreaking but insightful film, West of Memphis, which was produced by Peter Jackson and his wife, Fran Walsh. West of Memphis chronicles the West Memphis Three as they were wrongly convicted of killing three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993. In 1994, they were sentenced to life in prison with the so-called leader of the group, Damien Echols, sentenced to death row. Around the time of their trial, HBO commissioned the documentary, Paradise Lost, which put this case into national spotlight. After the film came out, two sequels were made and followed the progress of the men in prison but also helped raise awareness for them as well. As the films came out, people like Henry Rollins, Pearl Jam, Johnny Depp, Dixie Chicks, Marilyn Manson, all came out to try and lend support to free the men. One of the celebs was Peter Jackson, who helped finance a new legal team to get their case reopened. West of Memphis, directed by Amy Berg, chronicles the push to get the men out. Now, as they all live free lives, the film is a testament to how corrupt the American judicial system is and how the power of the people is not blind to injustice.

Underrated Classic: Temple of the Dog
A year after Mother Love Bone singer Andy Wood died of a drug overdose, his roommate, Chris Cornell, formed a band with some of the members of the group he was in along with Soundgarden drummer, Matt Cameron. That band would become Temple of the Dog. In 1991, the band released their only record as a tribute to Wood. The record was a songs inspired by him, unfinished tracks he had, and a way for his friends to heal following his death. The record also featured an unknown singer named Eddie Vedder on backing vocals and the lead single, "Hunger Strike." The band of course became the root of what Pearl Jam would be since it featured Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, who played in Mother Love Bone, as well as a Seattle-area guitarist and friend of Wood's Mike McCready. After the album was released it would go on to become platinum. The rest of the members would go on and become Pearl Jam with Vedder, and later would bring in Cameron on drums. Soundgarden would call it quits in the late 90s but would reactivate in 2010. While the light of Temple of the Dog would dim, it was turned on again last year as the band toured for the very first time to support the 25th anniversary of the album.

During a recent New York screening of the new documentary on HR from Bad Brains, Finding Joseph I, the singer said that the band might be working on new music this year. "“Well what I’ve been talking to Doc and Darryl about was if they’d like to come together in the fall,” he said. The band's last record was 2012's Into the Future.
Speaking to Fact Magazine, Missy Elliot said she has enough music for a new record but don't hold your breath on its release. She said: "I got enough records to make an album, but I would never say a day or time that it would happen because those fans are brutal and they will stone me if I told a date and it didn’t drop on that date. I have learned my lesson from other artists go through that. The element of surprise works for me. It gets a little crazy out there and I don’t wanna get jumped by my fans, so I’m gonna keep it a secret. People don’t understand that things happen behind the scenes. It may be a sample clearance, or anything, so I’d rather just wait."
In May, the soundtrack to the grunge-era film, Singles, will see the soundtrack reissued. The double reissue will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the film and will contain the remastered soundtrack as well as a companion record of rarities from Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell, and songs that didn't get included in the film and original disc.
Jarvis Cocker is linking up with Chilly Gonzalez for the collaborative record called Room 29. The album is a concept record about the infamous Room 29 inside L.A.'s Chateau Marmont Hotel. The album arrives in March.

Underrated Clasic: Mother Love Bone 'Apple'
Before Pearl Jam was even a thought, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament were in the Seattle grunge anthem band Mother Love Bone. Fronted by the charismatic Andy Wood, Mother Love Bone became one of the local heroes of the early Seattle scene. The band's live shows were the talk of the town and Wood was poised be to rock and roll's next big hero. After gaining national critical attention with their debut EP, Shine, in 1989, they signed with Mercury Records and headed to northern California to record their debut Apple, with a then-unknown producer Terry Date, who would later go on to work with Deftones, Pantera, Soundgarden and Slayer. Apple was one of the year's most anticipated releases and days before it arrived to the world, Wood was found by his girlfriend after he overdosed on heroin, he later succumbed to his addiction after falling into a coma in the hospital. The band came to a crashing halt. The album peaked at No. 34 on the charts and later Wood's roommate Chris Cornell, along with his Soungarden drummer Matt Cameron brought Ament, Gossard together with Seattle musician Mike McCready and formed Temple of the Dog. They crafted a record in tribute to their late friend. Within a small amount of time, Ament, Gossard, McCready formed Pearl Jam with Eddie Vedder. As Pearl Jam continue to feel the success of their music, it all started with this tragic story and record that displayed wasted talent at its fullest. In 2016, a special box set marking the 25th anniversary of the record was released.

Speaking to Guitar World, St. Vincent said that her new album will arrive in the spring and will be "a real sea change." She said: "I’ve been able to step back and reflect and not just be in the tour, record, tour, record cycle that I’ve been in for about 10 years. I think it’ll be the deepest, boldest work I’ve ever done. I feel the playing field is really open for creative people to do whatever you want, and that risk will be rewarded—especially now that we have such high stakes from a political and geo-political standpoint. The personal is political and therefore the political can’t help but influence the art. And only music that has something pretty real to say is gonna cut the mustard.”
Haim spoke to Entertainment Weekly and said that their sophomore album should arrive in the summer. "We decided we were going to do what we’ve always done,” said guitarist Danielle Haim. “We wanted to get back to our so-called roots. We needed just it be the three of us in the beginning. We just wanted to get back in the zone.”
Kendrick Lamar praised President Obama in the latest issue of XXL and said: "We would probably never get inside that house ever again. Think about it like that. Rick Ross, Cole, Nicki Minaj, he really went for us to come experience it." He also added: "You look at him as such a high figure in the world, but for him to embrace you and have a connection with you further than just being the President and make you feel like an actual friend,” was “one of his best characteristics.”

Live Review: Temple of the Dog at Madison Square Garden
It was an event 25 years in the making. The members of Temple of the Dog toured for the very first time to celebrate the anniversary of their only record and it took them to clubs, amphitheaters and Madison Square Garden.
The band formed following the passing of Mother Love Bone singer Andy Wood. Wood died at 24 of a drug overdose, his then-roomate Soudgarden's Chris Cornell got together with his drummer, Matt Cameron and Mother Love Bone members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament as well as Gossard's high school friend Mike McCreedy to form Temple of the Dog. They crafted a tribute record to Wood and little did they know that the band eventually formed the blueprint to Pearl Jam and help put Seattle grunge on the map.
In many ways they are a super group. In many ways they are a one hit wonder. In many ways this band was just a side project that did really well. Whatever the case may be, Temple of the Dog's fans have waited for this moment to happen for too long.
Headlining Madison Square Garden is no easy task, both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden have done it but in this fashion it was different and there were many kinks early on.
Hitting the stage and opening with "Say Hello 2 Heaven" and "Wooden Jesus," Cornell's voice sounded off and the band did not seem in sync. By the time "Call Me a Dog" and "Your Savior" were played, things changed. It finally found a balance.

The Temple of the Dog album only had 10 songs on it, so for the 135 minutes they were on stage, they filled the gap with Mother Love Bone tunes and covers. Cornell became the master of ceremony as he brought the fans inside for a trip down memory lane. Playing songs from the Singles soundtrack as well as songs they were listening to while making the album. Songs like David Bowie's "Quicksand," The Cure's "Fascination Street," Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," Zeppelin's "Achilles Last Stand," and the closer Sabbath's "War Pigs," the night became a rock and roll extravaganza.

Of course "Hunger Strike" was performed and Cornell had the audience sing Eddie Vedder's famous lines but to much disappointment the Pearl Jam frontman did not join the band on stage. It left a hole in many hearts, however, Temple of the Dog were there to prove this isn't going to be a Cornell show, a Soundgarden gig or Pearl Jam concert. It was there moment -- 25 years later.

This sounds like a Hell of an idea -- while speaking with Noisey, Richard Ashcroft said he would like to make a musical featuring the music of Oasis and his band, The Verve. Ashcroft said: "I'd like to do a musical of [Verve] songs combined [with Oasis songs] in a story of both our youths and the combination at the end and the fact that we have crossed paths, been mates [and] looked after each other."
Iconic hip-hop group Digable Planets have announced they are reuniting for a series of concerts this summer.
Following Springsteen and Ringo Starr, Pearl Jam are 86ing their upcoming North Carolina tour stop. In a statement they posted on social media, the band said:
AC/DC's Brian Johnson released a statement on Tuesday afternoon to announce that while he will no longer be able to tour with his band, he will still record with them due to doctors saying he could permanently lose his hearing should he continue to perform on stage. He wrote: "Our fans deserve my performance to be at the highest level, and if for any reason I can't deliver that level of performance I will not disappoint our fans or embarrass the other members of AC/DC. I am not a quitter and I like to finish what I start, nevertheless, the doctors made it clear to me and my bandmates that I had no choice but to stop performing on stage for the remaining shows and possibly beyond. That was the darkest day of my professional life."
Johnson, who will be replaced by Axl Rose on the road, said: "I am personally crushed by this development more than anyone could ever imagine. The emotional experience I feel now is worse than anything I have ever in my life felt before. Being part of AC/DC, making records and performing for the millions of devoted fans this past 36 years has been my life's work. I cannot imagine going forward without being part of that, but for now I have no choice. The one thing for certain is that I will always be with AC/DC at every show in spirit, if not in person."
He also added: "I wish to assure our fans that I am not retiring. My doctors have told me that I can continue to record in studios and I intend to do that. For the moment, my entire focus is to continue medical treatment to improve my hearing. I am hoping that in time my hearing will improve and allow me to return to live concert performances. While the outcome is uncertain, my attitude is optimistic. Only time will tell."

Paper magazine this month has enlisted rappers of today talking about the influence of rappers of the past. Kendrick Lamar has written about Easy-E, who said: "I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for Eazy and I wouldn’t be able to say the things that I say, talk about my community the way I talk about it, for good or for bad. He’s 100 percent influenced me in terms of really being not only honest with myself, but honest about where I come from and being proud of where I come from.”
For the same Paper feature, Eminem wrote about 2Pac, who said: "He was taking things further than a lot of rappers at the time -- pushing it to the next level as far as giving feeling to his words and his music. A lot of people say, "You feel Pac," and it's absolutely true. The way he chose which words to say with which beat was genius; it's like he knew what part of the beat and what chord change was the right place to hit these certain words... to make them jump off the track and make you feel what he was saying. Like, listen to "If I Die 2Nite." Whatever he was rapping about, it was urgent. If it was a sad song, it'd make you cry. But there were a lot of different sides to him: fed-up, angry, militant, having a good time. His spirit spoke to me because it was like you knew everything that he was going through, especially when he made Me Against the World. You just felt every aspect of his pain, every emotion: when he was happy, when he was sad. His ability to touch people's lives like that was incredible."

While Vedder and Obama were hanging, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Blur bassist Alex James spent New Year's Eve partying together at the musician's country home outside London.
The Modfather, Paul Weller spoke to Uncut about his upcoming album, Saturn's Pattern, which still doesn't have a release date, but has raved about the progress of the record. He said, "I think it's one of the best things I've done. And it's been a pleasure doing it. There's been no headaches. I can't compare it to any of my other albums. I think it's different not just for me, but different from what else is around. It's been pretty quick, really. We did a bit of work before the summer, then I took a break because I was out on the road. We started back in October. It's taken us a couple of months, maybe."
Sad new to report, Mercury Records co-found Irwin Steinberg has passed away at 94.

Underrated Classic: Pearl Jam 'Riot Act'
In 2002, a little over a year after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, very few people and artists had the balls to openly criticize the government. Yet, Pearl Jam released an entire album's worth of critical songs and stories against the George W. Bush administration with their seventh studio album, Riot Act. The album, which came just a few months before Bush would declare U.S. Troops would go to Iraq and take down Sadaam in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and while bombings were happening from U.S. planes in Afghanistan, Pearl Jam openly put their feelings, thoughts, emotions and career on the table to say "Stop." Riot Act was a record that saw outspoken Eddie Vedder blossom into the protest leader that he had been hinting to become, it was also the record that nearly cost the band their career as fans across the country would boycott or openly boo them in concert, especially at a notorious gig on Long Island's Nassau Coliseum. Riot Act, which was much more experimental in sound, it was much more stripped down, darker, folkier, than previous Pearl Jam efforts, including No Code, it was the most art type of rock the band had ever done. Songs like "Bu$hleaguer," "Green Disease," "Help Help," "Cropduster," showed the band's disapproval to government actions. Yet, tracks like "I Am Mine," "Save You," "Love Boat Captain" were some of Vedder's most tender and personal lyrics. When the record arrived, it was met with mix reviews and despite selling well, the record has been pushed aside over time due to the controversy around it. Well, we felt now is the right time to dig it up. Riot Act is an underrated classic.
