Queens of the Stone Age  - Villains

The world’s favorite stoner rockers return with record chock-full-of groovy rhythms, slick rock and roll, and catchy tunes. With Mark Ronson behind the decks as the sole producer of Villains, the British DJ and artist helps bring the uptown funk to the California dessert as he and Queens keep their fingerprint on a whole new sound. While it isn’t a total 180, they remain true to themselves while daring to take a bold new step that works perfectly.

Tyler, The Creator – Flower Boy

The former Odd Future ringleader returns with his most personal, private, and autobiographical record to date. Since the release of his outstanding Goblin, in 2011, Tyler, has been slowly revealing who he is to the world, now, with Flower Boy, it fully blossoms. He confronts himself about his sexuality, who he is as an artist, and how it is time to grow up.

FINAL GRADE: A-

Grizzly Bear – Painted Ruins

The low-fi indie rock favorites with a record that has more of a pulse than some of their previous efforts and that is thanks to part to some actual upbeat songs and not just an album filled with moody harmonies and dark undertones.

FINAL GRADE: B+

Gogol Bordello – Seekers and Finders

In the age of Donald Trump and Theresa May, where anyone who was not born in their respective countries needs to get out – here comes Gogol Bordello to once again remind us the importance of immigrants, other cultures, and creeds. The gypsy punks have just put out what could be their most important record and a weapon in the fight against ugly nationalism while still sounding as if they are having the time of their lives. Like other releases from the band, it is a party and learning experience.

EMA – Exile in the Outer Ring

On her third record, EMA, pushes herself and the sounds she has crafted on her own to find herself going into a deep, mysterious, unknown rabbit hole of creativity and curiosity.

Ghostpoet – Dark Days and Canapés

The tender and timid British electro singer releases what we like to call an “end of the night” record for the summer. After coming home from a night out, this is one that you want to put on and unwind to while having a nightcap. The soulful and blip-filled disc continues to make Ghostpoet one of the more interesting and underrated artists out there today.

FINAL GRADE: B+

Unkle – The Road

After seven years away, the mysterious and intense electronic group are back with help from Primal Scream’s Andrew Innes, Queen of the Stone Age’s Troy Van Leeuwan, Dhani Harrison, Mark Lanegan, ESKA, Keaton Henson, and the Duke Spirit’s Liela Moss. The Road is a journey through space and time and our captains are Unkle.

FINAL GRADE: B

Dead Cross

The self-titled debut album from the supergroup containing Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo, and Retox’s Justin Pearson, Michael Crain, is a as straight forward as it gets for someone like the Faith No More front man. However, adding the other monsters to the mix makes the record worth listening to.

Iron and Wine – Beast Epic

The singer / songwriter is back with a new collection of songs that just extends his vast and solid catalogue.

Rainer Maria

The self-titled reunion record from the indie heroes is a safe return to form and will certainly make old fans happy to hear new tracks.

Guided By Voices – How Do You Spell Heaven

The second release of 2017 from the indie rock titans at first came out as a surprise since earlier this year they put out the very good and very long double album, August by Cake. Now, the quick follow-up is How Do You Spell Heaven, which continues the legacy of this band that does not want to stop but it might just be too much music for one year.

FINAL GRADE: B-

Washed Out- Mister Mellow

The shoegaze artist is back with a record that is perfect for the last days of summer. As anxiety about school, work, and the fall, heats up, this is an album that will help you mellow out.

FINAL GRADE: B-

Big Boi – Boomiverse

The Outkast rapper returns with a new solo record that is a solid effort and a bit middle of the road. Boomiverse has decent beats and rhymes from the hip-hop icon as well as special guests Killer Mike, Gucci Maine, Adam Levine and production from Organized Noise and Scott Storch, it falls flat in the age of young guns like Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, and Vince Staples.

FINAL GRADE: C

TLC

The long-awaited new album from the R&B group has finally arrived and it is not very memorable. It contains the spirit of the band but lacks the unity without the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez and it might have been too long away from the scene for T-Boz and Chili to fully pull out their potential.

FINAL GRADE: C

Action Bronson – Blue Chips 7000

The Blue Chips series for Action Bronson has been some of his best material after Well Done and Bon Appetite.. Bitch, yet, since the Queens rapper has gone mainstream with his various Vice shows, hanging with Mario Batalli, and inking a major label deal, rap has been his backup plan. On his second record for Atlantic Records, following the abysmal Mr. Wonderful, Blue Chips 7000 doesn’t even deserve to be named after the stellar series it comes from. The record lacks focus and creativity. If Bronson wasn’t too busy with everything else in his life, including a new cook book arriving next month, and focused on his music, what he should be turning into Atlantic are classics not middle of the road and uninspiring records.

Coldplay – Kaleidoscope EP

In the past, it was always easy to take aim at Coldplay for their sensitive and tender sound but they took it on the chin and released great records like Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head, Viva La Vida, and even X&Y. They were creative artists that were paving their own way, they 2011 happened and since the unlistenable Mylo Xyloto, they are just a pop band that tries really hard, a little too hard at making radio friendly pop songs. With the exception of the somber Ghost Stories, nearly everything the British band has put out in six years has been manufactured crap and their latest EP is another victim of that. Why bother at this point releasing anything? Why bother trying to please anyone if all you want to do is be on the radio and not fulfill a creative hole? If that is what the band wants, fine, do it, just don’t expect it to be good.

The former Oasis singer broke out classics like "Rock N Roll Star" and "Live Forever," from his old band to his city. The latter featured Coldplay backing him. He also performed his new single "Wall of Glass."

Beck has said his new album, the record that was supposed to arrive last year, will come "very soon," he told NME. He added: "This record was supposed to come out over the last year, and then I’ve been touring and doing a million other things.

Speaking to The Talkhouse podcast, Jarobi White of A Tribe Called Quest about unreleased Phife Dawg tracks, the making of last year's best record, We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, and his solo record. He said: "Phife has mad verses floating around. Of course there is shit that we didn't use... I kind of want to do something to get a lot of the songs that he did late because the level that he was on when he passed was the best he's been in a long time. Not that he was ever bad but I'm just saying, he was killing shit... Good fucking lord... Yo so I want people to hear those you know what I mean?" He added that he is working on a solo record, saying: "It's like I don't know if I ever really considered doing a solo album before, you know what I'm saying? The response that I'm getting from this album, people are like, "Yo my dude, oh my god I didn't know you could rap!" I'm like, "You're silly then!" How am I going to be around Q-Tip and Phife for twenty years and I can't even rap? That doesn't even make sense, if I have half a brain I've got to absorb something. You know what I'm saying? I have to get something from the two of the best dudes to hold mic ever. Like I'm not going to get nothing from it?... People are asking for it which is crazy. I've only ever done, I've done one single before and was scared to put it out. It's a dope song. I kind of put it on Soundcloud for a couple of days and took it down because I was chicken shit. I just want to make sure that it's the dopest shit in the world hopefully, if I have that we'll see."

Speaking to T Magazine, Kendrick Lamar gave some insight into the follow-up to 2015's best album, To Pimp a Butterfly and concepts he is playing around with for the new record. "I think now, how wayward things have gone within the past few months, my focus is ultimately going back to my community and the other communities around the world where they’re doing the groundwork,” he said. “To Pimp a Butterfly was addressing the problem. I’m in a space now where I’m not addressing the problem anymore. We’re in a time where we exclude one major component out of this whole thing called life: God. Nobody speaks on it because it’s almost in conflict with what’s going on in the world when you talk about politics and government and the system.”

Lou Reed's archives have been acquired by the New York Public Library. The library will feature some of his personal items, artifacts, as well as a listening room that will play the late Velvet Underground frontman's music.

Cloud Nothings will release her new album, Life Without Sound, in January.

The late Phife Dawg's wife, Desha Head Taylor, told Okayplayer that a posthumous album from the Queens rapper will arrive next year. She said: "His solo album will be out probably sometime during the first quarter of 2017. We’re working on it now. He completed his entire solo album before he transitioned, so we’re excited about releasing that.”

For the first time in 33 years, Glenn Danzig has rejoined Misfits with the original line-up of Jerry Only and Doyle. The horror punk icons will perform at Riot Fest in Denver and Chicago in September.

Slowdive have confirmed that they are recording their first album in 20 years. No word as to when the record will arrive. 

 Speaking to Beats 1's Zane Lowe, Coldplay's Chris Martin gave insight into the future of the band. The singer said: "We’re comfortable with being who we are at the moment. I think when we let go of the idea we had to try and win everyone over I think that was really liberating. I’d be surprised if there was another conventional Coldplay album. I just feel like we’re right where we’re supposed to be right now. I meant what I said to you a couple of years ago I feel like this is a closing chapter of something. I stand by that I’m afraid."

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has confirmed that Wednesday, January 20 is David Bowie Day in the city.

Speaking of Bowie, the late and great legend turned down an opportunity to be featured on a Coldplay song. Drummer Will Champion told NME that the band once approached the "Ziggy Stardust" singer to be featured on a song and Bowie apparently replied: "It's not a very good song, is it?" Champion then added: "He was very discerning – he wouldn't just put his name to anything. I'll give him credit for that!"

Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def has apparently quit music and acting and will release his final album this year.

Before the Syrian civil war, the countries orchestra had performed with Gorillaz and Damon Albarn and now the singer is looking to reunite the performers. Albarn and the orchestra under the conducting of Isaam Rafea will perform in London in June. It will be their first performance as an orchestra in five years. 

 In a new interview with Collide Art & Culture, Thurston Moore doesn't seem to understand why he is being blamed for the end of Sonic Youth. The singer was having an affair for years even though his wife Kim Gordon was in the band. The band ended in 2011 and he is now coming forward talking about the aftermath. He said: "I find it really strange that I get demonised [sic] for the break-up of Sonic Youth when I myself had no intention of breaking up the band; that was a real surprise to me. I get the reasons behind the band not existing at the moment — everyone has to be on the same page — but there was never any announcement. Well, I never made one." He added: "For me, it goes on and won’t end. I write songs now and people say, “It sounds kinda like Sonic Youth” — well, that’s my vocabulary, you know. What you’re not hearing is Lee and Kim because they’re not playing the music with me, so it’s a different situation."

Speaking to Rolling Stone, RZA has confirmed that an Ol Dirty Bastard biopic is in the works. He said: "I think it's a great idea, and there has been talk about it. There are a few wheels in motion with one done by our first cousin Rayshawn. He was the young guy there watching everything that happened. Him and ODB's wife have been talking and he has a pretty interesting script. I just saw a 12-minute teaser that he shot about a year ago and it felt pretty fucking cool. I watched it and was like, 'Wow, you may have something here.' He has the best thing that I've seen so far."

2015 The Albums: Top 10

Looking back on the year that was, 2015 seemed to be dominated by hip-hop. It is no surprise since the genre has been building for the better part of the decade and more up and coming artists are paying homage and styles to the emcees of yesterday with a new flavor. This year we saw A$AP Rocky, Joey Bada$$, Vince Staples and king Kendrick give us the socially conscious and new school / old school mix. While Drake and Fetty Wap dominated the airways, there was more context with the artists that didn't go as viral. It was also the year that major reunions went belly up -- disappointing records from some of the most anticipated artists like Refused, The Libertines and Faith No More, led the pack while Coldplay and Adele might be selling tons of albums they released very forgettable records.  Yet, there were some reunions that did do right by their fans -- Blur, Sleater-Kinney and New Order pleased the fan base that had been waiting for new music for so long.

Brooklyn’s Joey Bada$$ turned 20 this year but has been turning heads since he was 17. After a series of acclaimed EP’s and mixtapes, Bada$$ arrives in grand fashion with his full length debut, B4.DA.$$ and brings with him a touch of 90s glory days and a willingness to showcase he is one of the leaders of the new school. He brought pure fire at the top of the year with his debut. A ferocious look into the mind of someone who doesn’t seem to be in the music for the fame but for the message.

In 1994, the Notorious BIG rapped "You never thought that hip-hop would take it this far," 21 years ago, Biggie Smalls probably wouldn't even imagine the brilliance of seeing hip-hop on Broadway being used to tell a historical tale of one of America's founding fathers. This is the saga, the brilliance, and the brainchild of Lin Manuel Miranda and his cast of Hamilton. This is the first time a soundtrack, let alone an original Broadway cast recording has ever made a year end list but with something this special, this phenomenal and most of all this good, it is hard to resist.

 8. Titus Andronicus - The Most Lamentable Tragedy

New Jersey prog-punks Titus Andronicus have made their best work when they are focused on a story and an idea. Their debut, The Airing of Grievances and their sophomore album, The Monitor, all were focused on a story crafted by singer Patrick Stickles. Yet, their third record, Local Business, was not only flat, it was all over the place. Now, with The Most Lamentable Tragedy, they found their focus again and with a 98-minute punk opera, this band sees no bounds and continues to push the envelope as to what a band should do.

7. Florence & The Machine - How Big How Blue How Beautiful

Three albums in, Florence is proving that she is more than just a musical machine, but a modern musical goddess. The Welsh singer with a voice that can make angels cry returned with her most personal album to date. Focusing on personal heartbreak and overcoming obstacles, Florence takes her arraignments and sound to a new level.

6. New Order - Music Complete

In the decade since their last album, New Order broke-up, then reunited without founding member Peter Hook and now released their 10^th album – as much as fans may scratch their head that it isn’t New Order without Hooky, this album is some of their best material since the 1980’s. New Order take the new wave style they helped usher in, add more Euro trashness to it and sharp delivery for a record that is a party from start to finish. What is missing is Hooky’s signature bass lines and playing but it is made up for in Gillian Gilbert and Phil Cunningham’s synths.

5. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Chasing Yesterday 

Chasing Yesterday is Noel Gallagher coming into his own and putting his past behind him, while the only yesterday he may be chasing is selling out massive stadiums around the world, he goes for that sound but on a different level. Chasing Yesterday is a bit more eccentric and intimate that his 2012 solo debut. Fusing jazz and rock, Gallagher goes for something new and it works.

4. Jamie xx - In Colour

What started out as the perfect record for this past summer, grew into something so much more. The xx DJ has been making solo records with the likes of Gil Scot-Heron and EP’s under his name, but now with his full on debut, he brings his xx members and shines like the sun. In Colour combines his ambient sounds he is known for but combines calypso, soka, hip-hop, jazz, and raga, all over eletronic beats. This is a record for the beach, sunsets, and lounging.

3. Bjork - Vulnicura

The last time Bjork dazzled her audience was in 2011 with her app album, Biophilia, now, the Icelandic princess who has always discussed nature, life, and science, travels inward for the first time to discuss herself. Vulnicura is Bjork at her most vulnerable. It is a breakup record that plays out like the plotlines of an Oscar contending film that rips from the headlines and heartstrings of Bjork’s own life. The album is an expression of her breakup with artist Matthew Barney and culminates three months before the split, the heart of the breakup, and the recovery after. With production by Arca and The Haxan Cloak, heartbreak never sounded so bittersweet.

2. Blur - The Magic Whip

It has been over a decade since we last heard new Blur material, but after years of on-again / off-again reunion concerts, the band finally gave us new music. The happy accident that is The Magic Whip hears a band that has no desire to repeat the past but only embrace the future and whatever the future may hold for Blur, this combination of four British men is something that we can always treasure and count on to give us something special -- no matter how long we have to wait.

1. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly

Two days after the 20^th anniversary of Tupac’s Me Against the World, Kendrick Lamar surprise released his sophomore album a week ahead of schedule and if anyone ever doubted that the Compton rapper could be the second coming of Pac, all doubts are officially pushed aside. Beautiful, raw, honest, intense, To Pimp A Butterfly is a modern poet putting social commentary and storylines over beats provided by the likes of Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Terrace Martin, Pharrell, Dr. Dre, among others. Clocking in at 80 minutes, which is long for any record, especially by today’s standards, Lamar lets his feelings about celebrity, love, the hood, and black culture out with a vengeance. Combining hip-hop, funk, jazz, psychedelica, and rock, Lamar defies the sophomore slump and proves he will not be pigeonholed. With lyrics about Trayvon Martin to Michael Jackson to Nelson Mandela, as well as his “interview” with Tupac, this record is a lyrical document of our times by a one-man verbal wrecking ball. Like last year's best album, Against Me!'s Transgender Dysphoria Blues, it is an album that speaks to our times and a record that decades from now will still be the center of conversation. It became an instant classic and the soundtrack to a movement -- "We Gon' Be Alright!" was the anthem for those still fighting a struggle. The power and brilliance behind this record goes beyond it being the album of the year, it might become the album of the decade and one of the best we will ever hear in our lifetime. Hail, Hail King Kendrick!

Coldplay have been confirmed for the upcoming Super Bowl Half Time show in February.

The soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight will be released this month on vinyl via Third Man Records.

The English Beat will release their new album, Here We Go Love! next year.

Speaking to The New York Times, Bono discussed how he got in touch with Eagles of Death Metal following the attacks in Paris during their gig at Le Bataclan and offered to send them home on a jet. He said: "We had a plane, which we put at the Eagles' use if they wanted it, but they found another way. The best thing we could do for our fellow musicians was to buy them phones. I spoke to Julian [Dorio] and to Jesse [Hughes]. But that was the best thing, Jesse said, just getting the phones to be texting and all the stuff that you do — social media — to find out what’s going on. Their phones were in the venue."U2 were in Paris at the time of the attacks and were going to perform a gig the following day which has now been postponed until this Monday. David Bowie's new album, Blackstar, or ★, as it is supposed to be called apparently, has been inspired by Kendrick Lamar. Speaking to Rolling Stone, longtime Bowie producer Tony Visconti said: "We wound up with nothing like that, but we loved the fact Kendrick was so open-minded and he didn't do a straight-up hip-hop record. He threw everything on there, and that's exactly what we wanted to do. The goal, in many, many ways, was to avoid rock & roll." LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy also played percussion on two songs. The record arrives in January.
